Scarlet Lady: Autumn/Winter Trends 2017

It’s been a long time since I wrote a trend post and I’m really excited about this one. Having been laid up with an injury all summer, the summer trends pretty much passed me by in a blur.

I think all Irish fashionistas love autumn/winter fashion because we know we’ll always get a lot more wear out of it. A harsh reality of our climate!

Once my ankle got stronger and I was back at work one of the first things I did was walk around the city centre and visit the shops.

Might seem sad to some but I really missed window shopping and checking out the new season trends. Have a browse at some of my favourite A/W pieces in stores now.

Red

From crimson to scarlet, various shades of red are everywhere this Autumn/Winter.

Red isn’t a traditional autumn/winter colour but most people can pull it off. I haven’t worn red in years but I’m excited to add some to my A/W wardrobe.

If like me, you’re a bit cautious when it comes to red, then one key accessory is a good way to go. I love these Stradivarius boots and they’re only €29.95 – bargain!

alt=<red-ankle-boots>

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be back in my heels for quite some time…

If you want something a bit more daring, you can’t go wrong with these high-shine PVC Topshop boots. PVC is huge this autumn winter also so go forth and shine!

alt=
I love this styling

Gucci slogan dupe t-shirts are everywhere at the moment and this red River Island one is amazing.

It’s from the plus size range and is available in sizes 18-26.

alt=

This red Gucci-style embroidered bag from Stradivarius is all kinds of fab – I bought it in black and it’s one of my favourite bags yet.

I always get loads of compliments on it and was it only €19.99.

My love for biker jackets knows no end and I’m determined to get a red one this autumn.

Check out this patent biker beaut which is €68 from Missguided.

alt=

Pearl embellishment

This is probably my favourite trend this A/W.

alt=<pearl-choker>

I’ve already succumbed to this trend – see above my choker from Penneys.

Other personal faves these AMAZING pearl studded boots from &OtherStories, these pink and black Topshop clutches and a Penneys denim jacket with pearl embellishment.

alt=

This adorable pearl embellished beret is from Nasty Gal – I really like that the pearls are securely fastened in, not just sewn on.

Piercing embellishment

This is a really cool trend, with everything from jumpers to bags sporting what look like nipple rings and barbells!

This little backpack is from Penneys, FYI.

alt=

I think these embellishments look particularly good on a chunky jumper.

alt=

Topshop has nailed the punk look with this denim jacket and skirt set with all-over piercing embellishment. Probably not an outfit for the airport…

Denim skirts

Ok bear with me, I know it’s September but the denim skirt will still be an A/W wardrobe staple.

We’ve been wearing denim skirts with bare legs all summer but you can still rock a denim skirt with boots and black tights.

Plain denim is out with sequins and fishnet diamond details taking centre stage at Topshop this A/W – perfect for all your autumn nights out.

For something a little simpler, check out this contrast panel stretch denim skirt from PLT at Asos – so cute!

alt=

Lace-up denim skirts are impracticality at its finest – but I can’t help liking them all the same.

An example of something I really like but wouldn’t be quite brave enough to wear!

alt=

Checks/Tweeds

If I’m honest I think this trend is a tad dull but at the same time, a brown tweed/check blazer is a great alternative to boring black for work.

It all depends on how you style it!

This long wool masculine style wool coat from Bershka looks great over a more casual outfit.

alt=
Long check coat. Pic: Bershka.com

Zara is definitely the place to go if you’re looking for a tailored piece, this double-breasted blazer is really cool.

alt=

For a slightly different take on the neverending heritage trend, try these high-waisted trousers from Topshop. The cropped cut and red thread through the middle gives them a modern twist.

PVC

Not one for the faint-hearted but I do have a serious love of all things PVC. These Jourdan Dunn for Missguided Londunn trousers are super cool.

alt=

For an equally bold look, there’s always PVC red leggings.

I think I’d feel like such a rockstar in these ones from Bershka, I could almost forget about my ankle!

alt=

Another high-shine piece I’m loving are these sassy little shorts with scallop details from Missguided.

Gorgeous for a night out and they come in gold and turquoise too – what more could you want?

Hope you’ve enjoyed this post- I certainly had fun “researching” and writing it.

Leave me a comment and let me know which A/W trend is your favourite.

Bargain Hunt: The best of the summer sales under €30

Summer sale season is here and as I’m pretty much confined to the house, I’m fighting the urge to spend all my money online.

I think shopping the sales online often beats trawling through shops that are busy at the best of times and complete pandemonium during sale (e.g. Zara).

While you can’t try things on, have you ever faced changing rooms during sale? Not a pretty sight! These are some of my favourite items from the summer sales and everything is under €30.

Missguided

One item which caught my eye (and that of many stylish Instagrammers) is this white denim buckled skirt.

It’s reduced from €44 to €22 and would be perfect for a sun holiday abroad. I’ve ordered this and it still hasn’t arrived … beginning to think it is lost! Anyway I’ll keep you posted on the fit.

alt=

I’m equally taken with the light blue version which is now €27, reduced from €44. (I have no idea why the blue one is €5 more btw).  It also comes in navy and black, for those of you who prefer a darker hue.

alt=
Blue denim buckled skirt

Asos

If you’re heading to a festival this year, then hit up Asos’s sale before you go. The Asos sale is the perfect place to get yourself a festival bargain like these cut-out shorts.

Featuring a funky lolly pop applique on the back, they’re bound to keep you feeling summery even if it’s chucking it down in Stradbally/Marlay Park/delete as appropriate.

These come in at €28/£21. I’m sure I don’t need to remind regular readers but buy in sterling from Asos, click here to find out why.

Another festival-worthy pick are these cute lilac shorts reduced from €37 to €26 – just don’t get them filthy!

PS- Asos don’t have a sale banner or sale section on their site anymore but these items are still available and reduced- you just have to search by description.

alt=

New Look

One spring trend I absolutely loved was chinoiserie/ jacquard prints. I’m on the lookout for a backpack in this print and can’t decide between these two New Look beauties.

The larger one is now €20, reduced from €29.99 and the cute mini one is €17, reduced from €24.99.

PLT

I spotted these unusual pink cracked vinyl trousers over on PLT and I think they are awesome. They don’t look like something you would find on PLT and are a real statement piece. €20, reduced from €39.

alt=

Another deadly PLT bargain is this bright pink swimsuit which is quite similar to Kylie J’s infamous Body Glove swimsuit. Reduced from €25 to €11.

alt=

Zara

Now away from the crazy colours to a classic black bargain from Zara. This cute little dress with lace-up sleeves is now €29.99 down from €49.95.

alt=

And how about this denim and gingham skirt for only €9.99??

alt=

Bershka

I recently bought these cute espadrilles in the Bershka sale, although I can only wear the left one at the moment. Reduced from €19.99 to €9.99.

alt=

Another great Bershka bargain is this bleached denim jacket reduced from €39.99 to €17.99. (I need to stop talking about festivals now… I’m so jealous I can’t go to Longitude!)

alt=

River Island

River Island always has adorable PJ’s and underwear but they can be pricey. Embrace your inner Ariel with this adorable seashell detail bra and briefs. These are both about a third of the original price with the bra reduced from €22 to €8 and the knickers down from €17 to €4.

I’m also loving this tropical palm print underwear set, again the bra is €8 and briefs €4 – Penneys prices!

Hope you guys enjoyed this bargain-busting post – I love hunting down bargains to share with you!

I’m off to flex my debit card, so leave me a comment below and let me know if you liked any of the items I featured.

PS- this is not a sponsored post.

I often post bargains I find over on my Facebook page, so if you want to see more of the same give it a like. You can find me here on Instagram and Twitter would love to connect with other Irish bloggers on there. Thanks for reading as always and I’ll be back soon with a new post – possibly a festival one, watch this space.

Baywatch and bad tan lines: 10 of 2017’s hottest swimsuits

Fun fact about me: I learned to swim at the age of 24 after being terrified of water for 16 years. Nowadays I’m still not the best swimmer but I’m hoping that I will have sufficiently recovered from my injury to allow a dip in the ocean on holidays.

Every year I write a swimwear post and it’s always one of my most popular annual posts, so this year I’m going to do two. This post will be dedicated to one-piece swimsuits and I’ll have another on bikinis coming soon.

I’m loving the denim/chambray trend that’s everywhere at the moment and I have a particular soft spot for this denim-effect swimsuit from Vavavoom.ie. I love the lace-up side details and scoop back also and at €26.99, it’s a pretty good price for a swimsuit. Vavavoom offer next day delivery to the UK and Ireland for €2.99 which is pretty awesome!

UPDATE: I ordered this and it was not flattering on me. It’s definitely not for anyone bigger than a B-cup, it squashed my boobs flat!

alt=

Oh, I loved this River Island one-piece initially. It beckoned me in all it’s green iridescent glory..then I realised it had a thong back. Nothing wrong with that but not for me. If I were 18 and going to Magaluf then maybe 😛

alt=
Green swimsuit. Pic: River Island.com

Despite this I still love RI swimwear, just look at this bandana print one-piece.

alt=

It’s safe to say, Zara swimwear is never anything short of glorious, can we please take a minute for this beautiful purple floral one-piece with cross-over straps?

alt=

Zara is embracing the Baywatch trend with these incredible Baywatch-themed swimsuits, I really want one!

Penneys had an amazing red Baywatch-style suit at the start of the year for only €6 but there must have been some issue with it as it disappeared from my local Penneys never to be seen again. *sobs quietly*

UPDATE: I tracked it down in Primark in Newry for £4 so that’s part of my summer swimwear sorted.

It will look great with my orthopaedic boot, I just know it…

Side-ties are one of the biggest swimwear trends this summer and although they’re bound to lead to weird tan lines/burn marks I love them.

This gorgeous pink swimsuit from Pretty Little Thing comes in at just under €25.

alt=

For a Versace look on a Primark budget, check out this black one-piece with gold chain straps. It’s only €27 from Pretty Little Thing, what are you waiting for?! It was out of stock for ages but I’ve managed to find one. Also available in white.

Metallics look amazing in summer and every time I’ve passed by &OtherStories‘ window on Grafton Street, I’m drawn to this gorgeous shiny silver swimsuit.

At €49 it’s quite expensive but a cheaper alternative is this iridescent purple swimsuit from Missguided for just under €34. Perfect for the all the mermaid wannabes out there!

I hope you all enjoyed this post and are looking forward to the next installation. I really love swimwear despite not going away that often.

I’m looking forward to bringing you the bikini post and until then check out my Pinterest swimwear board for more inspiration.

Hope you all enjoyed this post, leave me a comment below and let me know.

Bargain Bonanza: My Sale Shopping Picks

There’s only one cure for the post-Christmas blues: online shopping and hot whiskey. 😛 I’m currently lying in bed feeling very sick and sorry for myself so what better time to browse the best sale bargains?

Missguided is offering up to 75% off sale items. FYI if you have a holiday booked, their swimwear is massively reduced right now. Go forth and shop…

They also have some gorgeous dresses in sale, from causal slip dresses to more glamorous styles. New Year’s Eve outfit dilemmas sorted!

This 2-in 1 leopard camisole dress is reduced from €37.50 to €18.75, great for casual wear.

alt=

This black cold shoulder dress is a new twist on the classic slip dress. It’s reduced from €42 to €16.80.

alt=

For a New Year’s outfit, I love this Balmain-esque floral red dress.

It has all the Balmain details with zip front and black piping but has a more affordable price tag! This was €105 but now just €42.

alt=< Missguided zip through dress>

Asos is offering up 50% off sale items. Among the shoes I’m lusting after are these own brand silver loafers, €16, reduced from €27.

alt=

Another own brand bargain are these studded black flats. At only €22 now, they will be ideal for spring. They were €38 full price.

alt=< black studded flats>

Daisy Street is one of my favourite footwear brands available on Asos, they have amazing statement ankle boots including these two-tone snakeskin beauties. These are reduced from €47 to €27.33.

alt=< ankle boots>
Two tone snakeprint ankle boots.

I’m a big fan of Zara jeans as they are quite hard-wearing and a good fit. They have lots funky styles in sale from grungy paint-spattered jeggings to pink mom fit jeans.

These are all reduced from €29.95 to €19.95. Word of advice, Zara tends to stagger their reductions so these may go down further in price if you can wait.

Denim-lovers will also appreciate these Zara shirts. These are reduced to €39.99 from €49.95. Still relatively pricey but may be reduced further.

Pretty Little Thing is offering up to 50% off sale items at the moment.

They have some beautiful sequin playsuits and dresses if you’re looking for a little sparkle this New Year’s.

One thing to note about PLT’s sale is that an item may be reduced in one colour but not in another.

For example, the sequin playsuit is reduced from €42 to €16.80 in green, silver and gold but a multi-colour version is still full-price. The premium sequin dress is reduced from €70 to €42.

They also have statement bombers and cute accessories like this chain detail bag and multi-colour scarf. The purple bomber is now 50% off (was €49, now €24), the scarf is €8.40 (was €11.25) and the bag €21 down from €31.

River Island have some great discounts on winter coats at the moment. The cream puffer is half price at €60 and both the brown and pink coats are marked down from €95 to €45.

For sale shopping tips, check out my previous post and for online sale shopping hacks and discounts click here. I’ve rounded up some of the prices as decimal points frustrate me. 😛

Remember to check the returns policy, it will save you a lot of hassle. I recently attempted returning a full-price choker to Forever 21 only to find they don’t accept returns on jewellery.

It was in perfect condition, still in packaging and the receipt was in date! *shakes fist*

I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a lovely New Year also. Do you love or loathe sale shopping? Leave me a comment below.

PS- these are all my personal choices, I didn’t receive any payment or incentive to promote these brands. Thanks for reading as always and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

What to wear to a Christmas party: Festive Fashion Edit

Sick of all your dresses?  Contemplating wearing a Christmas jumper to the work do instead? Never fear, I have some Christmas outfit inspiration for you! And it’s not just dresses…

Sparkle always looks great at Christmas whether you choose a glittery accessory or a little sequin number. Glitter, sequins and embellishment are practically a requirement at this time of the year.

Folkster.com always have gorgeous glittery dresses in stock, ideal for a festive celebration.

These pink glittery shoes from Bershka add some festive cheer to any outfit. If you can’t afford to buy an entire new outfit for a Christmas party, these are only €29.99. A new statement accessory is great way to liven up an old outfit.

alt=

Christmas parties are synonymous with donning your best frock but a skirt and top combo can be equally glamorous. These sequin skirts from Pretty Little Thing are festive and fun.

Metallics also look great at Christmas like this patent silver mini from Bershka. This is a fitted skirt so a bodysuit is the best option for underneath.

alt=< silver mini skirt>

If you don’t like short skirts or glitzy dresses don’t feel pressured to wear one just for the Christmas party. Wear whatever you feel most confident in whether that’s a playsuit, jumpsuit, culottes or jeans and a top.

Longer skirts can be equally pretty like this sequined midi with tassel details from Zara. It has a side split but is not overly revealing.

alt=

These gorgeous emerald green culottes from Bershka are a lovely satin material and are a loose fit.

alt=

This perfect party top would look great with jeans, black trousers or culottes.

Culotte jumpsuits have been hugely popular this year and this rich burgundy one from Missguided is beautiful.

alt=< burgundy culotte jumpsuit>

Missguided have come up trumps with this simple but elegant green cowl neck dress for €37.50.

alt=

They also have some fab dresses on sale right now. The black velvet and red bodycon dresses below are just €13.50 each!  The metallic plunge neck  one is just €22.50.

For my own Christmas party, I wore this black dress with floral detail and a deep mesh V neck. I actually bought this dress in Catch for €26 and it’s an exact dupe for one I spotted in River Island a couple of months back.

The only issue I had with this dress was the floral appliques are slightly loose in places and may come off!

christmas-outfit
Black dress with floral details
floral-river-island-dress
Floral detail dress River Island. Pic: River Island.com

The only differences are my dress has slightly less floral detail and a lower V neck. The River Island one was about €50-60 as I recall. Both dresses are similar to a Dolce & Gabbana one worn by both Kendall AND Kylie! Who knows, maybe they share clothes too…

Red and green hues, velvet and jewel details are all great for a Christmassy vibe. That said, if you look great in white lace just go for it!

Hope you all enjoyed this post and got some inspiration for a party outfit. Do you like getting dressed up for Christmas?  Leave me a comment below and let me know.

Enjoy the party season and if you have to work over Christmas, you have my sympathies. :/

Leopards never change their spots

If I could describe how wearing leopard print makes me feel in one word, it’d be empowered. From Pat Butcher to Hollywood femme fatales, leopard print has always been a trademark of a strong confident woman.

Some may say it’s trashy, I say it’s sassy. If you too want to feel sassy this winter, then you need to add at least one leopard print piece to your wardrobe.

Being the fashion fortuneteller that I am, I picked up a vintage leopard print blouse in the Tola Vintage kilo sale in Galway. I haven’t worn it yet but now it’s on trend and will look amazing with black jeans and boots.

alt=

I’ve styled it with my oversize denim jacket and a Stella McCartney lookalike bag that my housemate kindly brought me back from holidays.

alt=
The leopard print looks great with an oversize denim jacket.

If you feel anxious about wearing leopard print, try a subtle pattern or a leopard print accessory first. Devotees can head straight for the faux fur coats!

These are some of my favourite leopard print lovelies on the high street at the moment. This Topshop belt would look great on blue or black jeans for a subtle leopard print accent.

alt=

If you want to go all out, then a leopard coat is the best way to make a statement.

Topshop have this fabulous faux fur one for €125. Definitely the most glamorous way to stay warm on a chilly winter night out !

alt=<topshop leopard coat>

If that’s completely out of your budget, here are two less expensive options. This brown leopard coat with an oversize collar is €84 from Missguided.

Bershka have a shorter style with a bold print for €59.99.

I also love this delicate leopard print blouse from Bershka. It’s only €19.99 and doubles up as workwear.

alt=

River Island have some great leopard print items, including this cosy looking stole which is a great alternative to a woolly scarf.

alt=<leopard print stole>

This biker beaury is courtesy of Zara, I’m dying to get this myself. I’ve seen Niamh Cullen from BehindtheBraids wearing it and it looked stunning on her! It’s not biker season but I digress…

alt=

For a daring night out look, I love this bardot playsuit from Missguided, €30.80.

alt=<leopard print playsuit>

No trend post of mine is complete without a few footwear options naturally. Topshop have great leather ankle boots for just under €100.

For a casual option, try these leopard lace-ups from Asos, on sale right now for just under €20!

The Choker Comeback

When was the last time you wore a choker? Chances are you were about 10 years old and they were as cool as gel pens and candy cigarettes in the playground.

Chokers have undergone quite a makeover since then. Out with the cheap black plastic and in with velvet, colour, layers and embellishment.

Let’s skip over the bizarre trend of choker dresses and embrace chokers how they were meant to be worn-as jewellery and accessories.

Bershka chokers.jpg
Choker set, Bershka.Pic.Bershka.com

Although so far, I’ve only bought black chokers (which go with everything FYI), I’m loving all the colourful ones like the  Bershka set above.

Wearing several chokers (if your neck is long enough!) or mixing them with dainty necklaces is the ultimate style statement.

alt=
Choker and necklace set. Pic: Bershka.com

Zara have some of the classiest chokers you’re ever likely to see. Also models with impossibly long necks…

zara-choker

alt=

I also really like bohemian chokers and pendant chokers. Etsy is the best place to find crystal chokers like this from ShopCrystalChild.

I also love the contrast in styles of this velvet and opal choker necklace from Alapopjewelry.

alt=

If you want to customise your own choker, then hit up Choker Saint on Etsy.com.

choker styles.jpg

For a punk vibe, try Nine Crow St’s heart chokers. I’m in love with this lilac one.

alt=
Lilac choker. Pic: Shopninecrows.com

I find the cord chokers are  messy and difficult to wear and the chunky ones look a bit odd so I’m sticking to skinny lace styles. Most chokers are adjustable to prevent them being too lose or too tight.

However if you can perfect the bow style, go for it!

alt=

This black lace choker is one of a set of two from Penneys and is the best fuss-free accessory ever!

Diamante styles are also creeping back but I’m not sure if I like them…if you fancy one then check out Chvker on Instagram.

I’m definitely going to be buying some more chokers soon. Do you like the choker trend? Which styles would you go for? Leave me a comment below and let me know your thoughts.

Spring it on

What will we be wearing this Spring/Summer? I’ve been browsing some of the high street and designer trends and here’s what I found.

Frayed denim is a really popular trend as seen here on Rihanna wearing Marques’ Almeida and has been seen on street stylers worldwide also.

riri marques almeida

Marques’ Almeida are responsible for this look slowing creeping in from the catwalk to mainstream.

marques almeida dress.jpg

Frayed denim can look a bit odd but remember we all thought distressed ripped jeans were odd too and how wrong we were! It can be blended into a casual or formal look.

For an adventurous look, try these long frayed edge jeans from Bershka.

Cropped styles look best, like these also from Bershka.

cropped frayed jeans.jpg

Zara have an entire editorial devoted to denim on their website. These white frayed denim styles are perfect for summer.

zara white frayed denim.jpg

Two-tone denims are also dominating the high street market this year. Topshop is the best place for this look.

Culottes- are these ultimate unwearable trend? I hated them at first because they are deeply unflattering and I like fitted clothing. However some people manage to make them look amazing-kudos! I think heels and a fitted top are key.

culottes.jpg
Pic: Pinterest.com

I prefer the more fitted culottes but these super wide leg ones from Boohoo look amazing (on the model anyway!) I’m not 100% sold on them for myself just yet.

boohoo culottes.jpg

Leandra Medine looking gorgeous and not one bit repellant in culottes..sigh. See my Pinterest fashion board for some more inspiration.

And the shoe of the season? Why python print! I have an unhealthy obsession with this print so I love these boots and shoes. These boots are from a new online store I’ve discovered, LASULA.co.uk.

python boot
Pic: LASULA.co.uk

I suspect there is no such thing as “python” print, it’s all good old-fashioned snakeskin! Indeed a customary search of Zara.com revealed one item tagged “snake” and zero tagged “python”. 😛

Lace-up styles are still popular, these babies from Bershka are just €25.99 right now. (I still can’t afford them though).

So what do you think of these trends? Anything I’ve missed? Leave me a comment using the grey speech bubble icon on the bottom right and let me know.

Hope you have all enjoyed this post and my last post interviewing Sinead Burke, it’s been one of my most popular posts this year so far. You can follow @joyofblogs on Instagram and Twitter or see my Facebook page here. Thanks for reading as always.

Kick the Bucket

Bucket bags are the new rucksack and my new favourite obsession. It’s the grown-up’s alternative to a rucksack but still a fun casual bag.The designer duo who began this craze are Mansur Gavriel who launched a sell-out leather bucket bag in 2013. Since this their bags have been in high demand by fashion-lovers and celebrities everywhere.

alt= "bucket bag"

alt= "Mansur Gavriel bucket bag"

Other designers such as Moschino and Michael Kors also want a piece of the action.

alt= "moschino bag"

The Mansur Gavriel designs retail at $400-$1000 so for those of us not so flush here are few gorgeous alternatives. Everyday walking to work I pass 9 Crow St and take a good gawk in the window.  I’ve been lusting after a gorgeous holographic bucket bag I saw there. I found a similar style on Etsy here.

alt= "Holographic Bucket Bag"

Etsy is brilliant site for finding original handmade bags. The Pingypearshop have an amazing selection and all under €30!

bucket bag

As well as these, Etsy also sell vintage and leather one-of-a-kind bucket bags. It’s the best place to pick up something that no-one else will have.

Zara are always very quick off the mark so I’m not surprised they have capitalised on this trend.

Gorgeous Zara bucket bag with zip detail  *swoon*.

And if white’s more your colour, Zara also have a fabulous perforated white bucket bag.

If these are beyond your budget, Penneys have some gorgeous bucket bags in store at the moment for about €10. Can’t say no to that 😉 I’m a personal fan of this green and black one and they also have a lovely black fringed one.

So far I haven’t bought any bucket bags but something tells me it won’t be long before I own one! I will have to part with a few of my rucksacks first if that’s even possible… Thanks for reading my blog as always. If you like the blog, please support it on Facebook here.

Autumn/Winter Trends 2014: Ripped jeans and check shirts

I spent my bank holiday Monday in a constructive manner ..window shopping A/W’s finest offerings. It’s finally starting to feel like autumn outside and I love autumn/winter clothes!

Today I popped into an awesome new(ish) vintage shop Tola Vintage which is in Temple Bar.

They had lots of gorgeous things including the autumn staple checked flannel shirts.

While I was in Paris I visited a kilo store in Paris St Germain which had loads of these shirts.

I wanted to buy one but I already had more than a kilo of clothing so I had to say no. This is a cropped shirt so not the most practical for winter.

Urban Outfitters have loads of check shirts (or plaid if you speak American) in different materials. Below are two that caught my eye while browsing.

Both shirts are from the “Urban Renewal” range. These are items that are upcycled from old clothes and transformed into a new garment.

I spied some amazing scarf-print halter tops with fringe trimming also which I will have to revisit.

Check scarves and oversized scarves are the accessories of the moment. Here are a couple of beauties I found on Pinterest – the bigger the better!

The perfect partner to a check shirt is, of course, ripped jeans. ]

This my favourite trend of the entire year, I love ripped and distressed jean styles.

Ironically it’s also the only trend Kim Kardashian ever got right. 😛

If you’re unsure about this trend, try a simple style like these Asos ripped knees below.

For a more distressed look, try DIY’ing an old pair. I tried out the trend with an old pair of jeans and set out “destroying.”

1. Mark the area with chalk where you want to rip. Rips generally look best on the knees and mid-thigh area. You will need to place a barrier inside the leg of jeans (like a piece of wood) to prevent any rips or tears going through to the other side.

2. Use a wire sponge, cheese grater or any abrasive item and run it over the area you want to distress. Have patience – denim is a thick material that takes time to wear down!

3. As the denim begins to fray, use your fingers to pull it at the white threads that will appear to create a distressed look. These will fray more with washing so don’t go too mad!

4. Finally, take a scissors (or serrated knife) and score the edges of the holes with the inside of the scissors NOT the tip. It’s very important not to use the tip of the scissors as it will destroy the “distressed” effect.  You want the edges to be ragged and uneven so use the inside blade of the scissors to achieve this.

I used old loose jeans that already had knee rips and am currently adding rips to the thighs.

If you don’t have an old pair then get to Forever 21 as they have great plain jeans for €7 at the moment, they are perfect for customising.

If you’re not sure about what you want here is some inspo! 😉

I don't know. I've never been a fan of ripped jeans but I'm started to think they're cute...is that a sin? What do you guys think?

If that’s all too much effort and you want extreme rips try these bad boys from Asos below.

Massive holes in your jeans aren’t the most practical item you could buy for winter in Ireland but they’re just so cool!

Ripped jeans used to be the ultimate in tacky clothing but they’ve now evolved into an everyday staple.

To keep them looking classy, cover up on top and wear flats, plimsolls or Converse are best.

Denim jackets also look amazing when ripped and shredded..get creative and see what you come up with.

As for the shoe of the season, the plimsoll is still going strong.

Once plimsolls were “indoor shoes” in national school, they now come in a multitude of styles, colours and textures and are anything but boring. Here are a few I really like.

These lovely velvet Missguided shoes are available in red and navy at only €22.

Finally, these graphic floral beauties are only €29 from the amazing Folkster.

If you haven’t been to their store in Temple Bar I highly recommend a visit!

Next weekend is their annual vintage kilo sale in Smithfield..I will be attending and reporting back. 😉

Hope you all enjoyed this post. I hope to be writing again soon and I’ve started a separate blog for non-fashion related topics.
