Best January sale buys under €30

January is here and purse strings are tighter than a noose. For the majority of people, it’s a month of cutting back and spending as little as possible.

One year, I did a no new clothes challenge and I fully intended on doing it again this year until I got a tax refund and my resolve weakened!

I’ve been browsing the sales recently and here are some of the best buys under €30 I’ve found.

New Look

The snakeskin trend isn’t going anywhere and I’m quite partial to these boots, €29.99 from New Look.

KLAXON: They are now down to €18 so I bought a pair in a five. They pinch my toes a little but the only six left were discoloured and a bit big for me!

Topshop Jervis is probably my favourite place to browse as the merchandising is always amazing, they’ve a huge range of stock, including a good vintage selection and they even have a Nine Crows concession now.

Yesterday, I picked up this little hat for €4 reduced from €20. I’d been on the lookout for a leather look beret and I couldn’t leave it behind!

There are lots of other berets reduced to €4, including this adorable tartan one.

Another gorgeous bargain from Topshop is this stunning strapless dress.

I don’t know if it would suit my body type but it looks amazing. Reduced from €40 to €20.

I honestly think Mango is possibly the most fashion-forward high street store, even more so than Zara.

These retro style bags were very popular last season and this pearl one is now just €19.99, reduced from €49.99.

Word of warning, these bags are quite heavy before you even put anything into them!

There were two pairs of cowboy-style boots from Mango I wanted to include but they were outside the €30 budget!

Bershka and all of the Inditex shops (Zara, Stradivarius, Massimo Dutti) are always a good shout for sale bargains, as they tend to stagger their reductions gradually.

This cute vinyl dress looks great layered over a light jumper or polo-neck for daytime or by itself with heels for a night out. Reduced from €35.99 to €17.99.

Another good buy coming in at €27.99 down from €39.99 is this cosy shearling and cord jacket.

Asos are currently offering up to 70% off in their sale and they have some really good jeans on sale.

I’m loving mom jeans lately and these Vero Moda ones come in at just under €25, down from €41. Shop in sterling and you’ll get them for just over €20.

Two other pairs that both come in at the €25 mark are these Oasis straight leg jeans reduced from €50 and these funky Glamorous jeans with frayed seam details down from €40.

With The Spice Girls set to make a comeback in 2019, chunky trainers are still in style.

Channel your inner Baby Spice in these holographic bad boys reduced from €50 down to €18.

There are some really nice pieces in the Stradivarius sale including this faux leather zip skirt.

It comes in dark purple, beige and brown and is reduced to €12.99 from €19.99.

Another item I really like is this grey long-sleeve t-shirt for only €5.99, reduced from €12.99.

Long sleeve tees are great for this time of the year, you can layer them under a gilet or jumper for extra warmth.

It would be a crime to finish this blog post without including some gorgeous heels because I’m a shoe freak.

I was recently browsing in Office and they have loads of discounts.

These lilac beauties are real leather and only €17 down from a whopping €78 while these studded mules are €30 down from €68.

And these western-style boots with silver piping are only €30 down from €56.

I’m quite conscious that many people won’t be spending money at the moment but if you are on the lookout for some bargains, I hope this has provided some inspiration.

I try and show a range of products from different shops in these posts and there are no affiliate links. Let me know if you would like to see more or less of these posts.

Next week I’m going to the River Island Spring/Summer press day and I’m also hoping to do some thrifty homeware posts this year.

Bargain Bonanza: My Sale Shopping Picks

There’s only one cure for the post-Christmas blues: online shopping and hot whiskey. 😛 I’m currently lying in bed feeling very sick and sorry for myself so what better time to browse the best sale bargains?

Missguided is offering up to 75% off sale items. FYI if you have a holiday booked, their swimwear is massively reduced right now. Go forth and shop…

They also have some gorgeous dresses in sale, from causal slip dresses to more glamorous styles. New Year’s Eve outfit dilemmas sorted!

This 2-in 1 leopard camisole dress is reduced from €37.50 to €18.75, great for casual wear.

This black cold shoulder dress is a new twist on the classic slip dress. It’s reduced from €42 to €16.80.

For a New Year’s outfit, I love this Balmain-esque floral red dress.

It has all the Balmain details with zip front and black piping but has a more affordable price tag! This was €105 but now just €42.

Asos is offering up 50% off sale items. Among the shoes I’m lusting after are these own brand silver loafers, €16, reduced from €27.

Another own brand bargain are these studded black flats. At only €22 now, they will be ideal for spring. They were €38 full price.

Daisy Street is one of my favourite footwear brands available on Asos, they have amazing statement ankle boots including these two-tone snakeskin beauties. These are reduced from €47 to €27.33.

I’m a big fan of Zara jeans as they are quite hard-wearing and a good fit. They have lots funky styles in sale from grungy paint-spattered jeggings to pink mom fit jeans.

These are all reduced from €29.95 to €19.95. Word of advice, Zara tends to stagger their reductions so these may go down further in price if you can wait.

Denim-lovers will also appreciate these Zara shirts. These are reduced to €39.99 from €49.95. Still relatively pricey but may be reduced further.

Pretty Little Thing is offering up to 50% off sale items at the moment.

They have some beautiful sequin playsuits and dresses if you’re looking for a little sparkle this New Year’s.

One thing to note about PLT’s sale is that an item may be reduced in one colour but not in another.

For example, the sequin playsuit is reduced from €42 to €16.80 in green, silver and gold but a multi-colour version is still full-price. The premium sequin dress is reduced from €70 to €42.

They also have statement bombers and cute accessories like this chain detail bag and multi-colour scarf. The purple bomber is now 50% off (was €49, now €24), the scarf is €8.40 (was €11.25) and the bag €21 down from €31.

River Island have some great discounts on winter coats at the moment. The cream puffer is half price at €60 and both the brown and pink coats are marked down from €95 to €45.

For sale shopping tips, check out my previous post and for online sale shopping hacks and discounts click here. I’ve rounded up some of the prices as decimal points frustrate me. 😛

Remember to check the returns policy, it will save you a lot of hassle. I recently attempted returning a full-price choker to Forever 21 only to find they don’t accept returns on jewellery.

It was in perfect condition, still in packaging and the receipt was in date! *shakes fist*

I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a lovely New Year also. Do you love or loathe sale shopping? Leave me a comment below.

PS- these are all my personal choices, I didn’t receive any payment or incentive to promote these brands. Thanks for reading as always and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

River Island Spring Sale

River Island currently have a sale on-perfect to grab a bargain dress for going out or a new spring jacket. River Island sales tend to be messy, manic and confusing so before you shop here are my top picks from their sale!

I love these light blue  courts reduced from €60 to €30.

alt="blue court shoes"

These real leather boots look really durable and are half price at €45.

alt="leather boots"

I’m normally not a huge fan of slogans but this one is great! And summarises my life perfectly.  It would look perfect with ripped jeans and white plimsolls or flatforms. At  €8 it’s Penneys’ prices!

alt="slogan tshirt"

This “Copenhagen” slogan t-shirt is equally cute and is reduced from €25 to €8.

alt="copehagen slogan t-shirt"

I love pop-art and comic book prints and I think this tablet case is adorable. You could always use it as an oversized clutch if you don’t have a tablet… 😉 It’s now only €8 reduced from €25! I bought my laptop case in River Island a few years ago and people are always commenting on how pretty it is for a functional item. This tablet cover is from a brand called Skinnydip, if you are looking for a novelty bag or fun phone case go visit their site now. You won’t regret it!

alt="pop art tablet case"

Continuing in a similar vein this geometric dress is very unusual and cool. I think it would really make you stand out on a night out! It’s now €24 reduced from €75.

alt="geometric dress"

I also like this sexy body-con dress now €24. I tend to shy away from cut-out panels as they can look really cheap and tacky but this one is really small. I also love the straps and the  criss-cross back of the dress.

alt="cut-out dress"

alt="black dress"

This coin ring is only €1! No need to say anymore!

alt="gold coin ring"

This marl and leather mix perforated jacket is really cute. It’s real leather and was €241, now €99.

alt="sporty leather jacket"

Finally colourful biker jackets are really big this spring and I really like this one in green. It’s a gorgeous colour and a nice alternative to black. They also have it in red/orange colour. It’s now €35, reduced from €80. It’s a lovely jacket for spring and I’m really looking forward to wearing jackets and light coats again. That winter felt like the longest in history….I am so sick of wearing coats and layers and tights! Bring on spring!

alt="green biker jacket"

Till next time, thank you for visiting my blog. Leave me a comment if you like these pieces. You can like my blog on Facebook here. A big thank-you to all the fellow bloggers who have liked the page so far-I really appreciate the support. 🙂

Sale shopping tips from a former retail worker

The sale season is upon us and it tends to turn the most sensible people into crazed banshees hunting for a bargain.

Stores are crowded, there are long queues for the fitting rooms and till and shops descend into chaos.

It’s incredibly tempting to buy reduced items but how can you be sure you are buying something of value? Having previously worked more sales than I care to remember I’m well qualified to advise.

Firstly try not to buy seasonal summer or winter clothing in the first few months of a season. It will inevitably be reduced in sale.

The big summer and winter sales serve a purpose, to help the retailers clear seasonal stock (and make them a ton of money).

This is especially important with summer clothing, after all in Ireland you only need a limited amount of bikinis/shorts/sun hats.

Do you really need a sequin bikini?

It’s very satisfying to get your summer clothing at bargain prices mid-season. It’s a matter of patience and playing the waiting game.

Watch out for markdowns ahead of the sale

Shops generally have to do a markdown the day before sale and it’s a mammoth effort.

To prepare in advance, some stores will mark the price tag with a pencil denoting the markdown price. It may look something like 0024. (€24). If you see this, it’s likely to be on sale.

Consider stock at full price and be aware of staggered reductions

Look out for any limited edition collections or outrageous colours or styles. These are often reduced in sale if they are not selling enough units at full price.

Conversely, items that are selling extremely well or basics are unlikely to be reduced.

Some retailers slash prices to half-price almost immediately to sell the stock faster while others will stagger reductions, going down 20%, then 50%, then 70% towards the end of the sale.

Try and go to the shops early in the first few days of sales.

After a few days of sale, the best items are gone and anything left will have been manhandled!

If you have difficulty dealing with crowds, mobility issues or have young children, mornings are a good time to scope out the sales without being trampled.

Weekends and evenings are peak times so beware.

Look out for signs of damage or wear on items before you buy.

Sometimes you can get an extra discount if something is damaged but think carefully.

You will more than likely not be able to return this if you knowingly buy a damaged product.

So if it’s something you can fix like a missing button then go ahead. Any major defects do not purchase. Hold onto receipts in case you change your mind.

Be sure you know the return policy before buying a sale item

Many stores offer both refunds and exchange on sale but some will only offer an exchange. If you aren’t sure, ask.

I tried to return a choker to Forever 21 only to find out they didn’t accept returns on jewellery.

The choker I planned to return but ended up keeping because of the refund policy

Also with some items such as jewellery and small accessories, the retailer may ask you to keep the item in its original packaging as well as keeping the receipt.

When trying on items, take your time.

Ask yourself if you can wear this garment with at least three other things in your wardrobe at home. If the answer is no, then you know what to do. Put it back!

During sales your size may not be available, trying on another size may seem like a good idea rather than missing out.

But if something doesn’t fit correctly it will never ever look good, it’s a waste of money and it will sit in your wardrobe taunting you forever.

Your feet will not grow or shrink and likewise, your body shape is unlikely to alter extremely!

When trying on a jacket, always button it up if it has buttons and check it doesn’t gape or sag. When trying a dress or skirt, walk around, sit or squat down.

This will give you an idea of how much movement the garment allows and whether you feel comfortable with the length sitting down. View yourself from different angles or ask a friend’s opinion.

Fitting rooms are manic during sales periods and some shops may even close them for the first day of sale, depending on how busy it is. So, always keep your receipt if you can’t try the item on.

When trying shoes be careful as sizes may have been mismatched during sale. Be sure to get the correct size and try to walk around in them even if the store is packed.

Think about your personal style and don’t buy something that you know isn’t “you”. Buy items you would happily buy at full price.

Look for good quality materials and staple items

High heels, smart dresses, workwear and handbags are items to look out for. Keep your eyes peeled for leather jackets, bags and shoes.

Leather is very durable and will last a long time. One of my best sale bargains was finding leather brogues reduced from €70 to only €18.

Leopard print brogues
These leopard print brogues lasted years

If you are buying for a special occasion, sales are a great opportunity. It’s easy to pick up a formal outfit for less rather than blowing a lot of money for one day.

Post-Christmas is a great time to buy a new coat at discount so try and hang on to your old reliable till then.

Grey coat

Check the labels for washing and ironing instructions.

You may see a lovely cheap dress but if it is dry clean or handwash only, ask yourself if you are prepared for the cost/effort of maintenance.

Remember most stores will be displaying full price items after a few days or in one part of the store. So be aware of this area if you came to specifically shop for bargains!

Treat the staff with respect and dignity

It may be hard to locate a member of staff during sales but remain courteous and they will help you with your needs.

Also, most stores tend to hire new or temporary staff at Christmas so if a staff member appears clueless they may be new. There is usually a manager on hand to help with any problems/queries.

Working during a sale can be very stressful and retail staff are juggling several demanding tasks at once. Most of them are on minimum wage also so try to have some empathy and patience when dealing with stressed-out staff and they will extend the same to you.

Best places to shop the sales

Now here are my picks of what’s on sale at the moment and the best stores to pick up a bargain. (Note this is an updated old post so these items will no longer be available).

Zara are fantastic for sale accessories such as this vintage-style belt now €16.99. This would be fantastic with jeans and a check shirt for a vintage vibe.

I also adore this clutch bag that I’ve had my eye on for a while! In black and white and now €9.99!

Image 1 of TEXT WALLET from Zara

If you are looking for cute phone/tablet cases, Zara has these by the bucket load!

For jumpers try Forever 21, I love this cable knit now €15.99.

Stradivarius always has amazing handbags in sale, in particular, this rucksack. Cool, practical and now €15.99!

Their footwear sale is usually worth checking out too, these metallic ankle boots are amazing. (€49.99)

Topshop is a good place to shop the sales, especially to get unusual pieces at reduced prices. Larger Topshop stores usually have concession rails and this is a great place to get a dress/playsuit on sale. Their denim range is also worth a browse.

Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts on sale shopping – do you love it or hate it?
