Why I didn’t buy any new clothes for my holiday

Nothing makes me happier than a new item of clothing.

Whether it’s the high street, a charity shop or a vintage kilo sale, I’ll be there, purse in hand, seeking the dopamine hit that comes with the latest purchase.

However, I have often bought items on impulse that didn’t really fit or suit me or didn’t match anything in my wardrobe. And this often happens when it comes to buying summer or holiday clothes.

These unworn items gather dust in bags, with me occasionally trying them on and discarding them in a huff and eventually they end up in the charity shop (usually when I move house because I’m quite the hoarder).

While going through my summer wardrobe, I realised I had quite a lot of things from the year before that I had not worn or only worn a few times.

For instance, I had two swimsuits and a bikini barely worn and shorts and a skirt that I hadn’t worn as they were *ahem* a little snug.

I have put on weight over the past year and a half and while I’m still relatively slim, I was hanging onto clothes that didn’t fit in the hopes I could somehow squeeze into them later in the year.

This is a toxic trap because I ended up feeling miserable every time I tried on something that didn’t fit.

While I ordered a couple of things online for holidays, nothing was quite right and I ended up returning everything. I was also short on cash prior to going away so I couldn’t afford lots of new things.

Eventually, I decided to just bring all my summer clothes and resolved to bring anything I didn’t wear to the charity shop on my return.

Here’s a taste of what I wore to Barcelona and how I created a capsule wardrobe with the clothes and shoes I already had.

alt=<levis=t-shirt>
Wearing a men’s t-shirt from Bershka and cut-off shorts

On our visit to Park Guell, I wore a casual and comfy outfit as there was a lot of walking uphill involved.

I also wore these shorts on our first full day in Barcelona, with a Guns N Roses tee.

They are one of my favourite items in my wardrobe but they are almost threadbare and I needed to get them patched before holidays.

I recommend altering or fixing your clothes before buying new ones but I may have to say adios to these shorts soon.

For nights out, I had packed a couple of options, including my black leather skirt.

This was €5 from Betty Bojangles which sells secondhand and vintage clothing in Smithfield and I absolutely love the fit and mock croc finish.

I paired it with my Shein green sequin top for dinner on our first night and wore it with my Topshop floral bodysuit for drinks with friends.

alt=
Excuse the lighting and setting!

For our trip to the Bunkers del Carmel, which is a popular spot on the city limits where people gather to enjoy the view, I wore a summery blue and white dress which I found in a charity shop for €4 during the heatwave.

alt=<blue-and-white-dress>
Blue and white dress

It was the hottest day when we went to the Basilica Sagrada Familia (that big ol’ church) and I somewhat foolishly chose a crop top and high waisted skirt.

I know you aren’t meant to wear “revealing” clothing to sacred places and I was told to pull the top down on the way in but as it was the end of the trip, I was running out of outfits.

This top from Penneys and the blue a-line skirt was bought in sale from Stradivarius.

I did (unintentionally) wear cross earrings, which I feel made up for my otherwise poor outfit choice!

I choose this light floral H&M dress for strolling on the Rambla de Catalunya and admiring Casa Battlo.

alt=

To complete my wardrobe, I brought two bags, a crossbody and a rucksack, as well as several necklaces, earrings and four pairs of shoes.

When I came home, I immediately took the clothes I hadn’t worn to the charity shop- they were all too small anyway!

I think that if you’re struggling to let go of unworn/old clothes, giving yourself an ultimatum such as wearing them by a certain date can work.

I’m very glad that I didn’t buy any new swimwear as we ended up only going to the beach once for a stroll on our final day. We had attempted to go another day but got caught in a giant thunderstorm! So I actually didn’t get to wear my bikini or swimsuits at all!

Hope you all enjoyed this post and leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts on buying clothes “just for holidays”.

And in case you’re wondering, I did treat myself to some new purchases in BCN – look out for an outfit post coming soon!

I will be writing an in-depth post on Barcelona so keep your eyes peeled for that.

The Colour Purple

Have you noticed all the lilac and purple hues this Spring? I love this colour and it’s everywhere from jumpers to lipsticks to wallets.

Last weekend I was in Belfast (more on that soon!) and I bought this pretty Topshop lilac ruffled jumper.

alt=

Not only was it a complete bargain, £15 in sale, €42 full price but it also combines another spring trend, ruffles! I’ll be wearing this blue jeans or with black leather-look trousers to work.

ootd-belfast

Excuse my face, I was a little hungover!

FYI, the sizing of this jumper was really off, I got a 6 which would normally be too small for me in a jumper but the 8 felt too tight!

I also picked up this lilac quilted wallet in Penneys for about £4.

It’s very similar to the Skinnydip wallets and matches this bag.

I may have to get the bag too!

I already own a *few* pastel purple pieces..

Warning: lilac runners are as impractical as white ones!

Super jealous of Kate Moss strutting her stuff in this pastel Chanel outfit.

Recently I even bought a lilac lippie and was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. I find pink/purple shades can make your teeth look a little yellow but I really wanted to try it out.

This “Charm” lipstick was about €2 from Bershka. If you want to try an unusual lip colour, go for a cheap lipstick in case you hate it!

"alt=<purple

I’ve been looking for a dress to wear to my graduation and I’m very drawn towards lilac and pink. This Missguided dress is currently reduced from €60 to €15 in sale – OMG!

These skinny cigarette trousers would be great to liven up a work outfit, €12 from Missguided.

It’s a bit early for pajama shorts but how cute is this set ?

Finally I’m in love with this Topshop mesh t-shirt, it looks great layered over a black or white top.

"alt=lilac

I don’t know but I’ve never had a pair of Converse yet. This “Frozen Lilac” style is just calling my name right now.

If you don’t like a lot of pastel colours, then an accessory like this beanie hat is ideal for just a splash of purple perfection.

Do you guys like lilac and pastel colours? Let me know, I’d love to hear your opinions.

Bargain Bonanza: My Sale Shopping Picks

There’s only one cure for the post-Christmas blues: online shopping and hot whiskey. 😛 I’m currently lying in bed feeling very sick and sorry for myself so what better time to browse the best sale bargains?

Missguided is offering up to 75% off sale items. FYI if you have a holiday booked, their swimwear is massively reduced right now. Go forth and shop…

They also have some gorgeous dresses in sale, from causal slip dresses to more glamorous styles. New Year’s Eve outfit dilemmas sorted!

This 2-in 1 leopard camisole dress is reduced from €37.50 to €18.75, great for casual wear.

alt=

This black cold shoulder dress is a new twist on the classic slip dress. It’s reduced from €42 to €16.80.

alt=

For a New Year’s outfit, I love this Balmain-esque floral red dress.

It has all the Balmain details with zip front and black piping but has a more affordable price tag! This was €105 but now just €42.

alt=< Missguided zip through dress>

Asos is offering up 50% off sale items. Among the shoes I’m lusting after are these own brand silver loafers, €16, reduced from €27.

alt=

Another own brand bargain are these studded black flats. At only €22 now, they will be ideal for spring. They were €38 full price.

Daisy Street is one of my favourite footwear brands available on Asos, they have amazing statement ankle boots including these two-tone snakeskin beauties. These are reduced from €47 to €27.33.

alt=< ankle boots>
Two tone snakeprint ankle boots.

I’m a big fan of Zara jeans as they are quite hard-wearing and a good fit. They have lots funky styles in sale from grungy paint-spattered jeggings to pink mom fit jeans.

These are all reduced from €29.95 to €19.95. Word of advice, Zara tends to stagger their reductions so these may go down further in price if you can wait.

Denim-lovers will also appreciate these Zara shirts. These are reduced to €39.99 from €49.95. Still relatively pricey but may be reduced further.

Pretty Little Thing is offering up to 50% off sale items at the moment.

They have some beautiful sequin playsuits and dresses if you’re looking for a little sparkle this New Year’s.

One thing to note about PLT’s sale is that an item may be reduced in one colour but not in another.

For example, the sequin playsuit is reduced from €42 to €16.80 in green, silver and gold but a multi-colour version is still full-price. The premium sequin dress is reduced from €70 to €42.

They also have statement bombers and cute accessories like this chain detail bag and multi-colour scarf. The purple bomber is now 50% off (was €49, now €24), the scarf is €8.40 (was €11.25) and the bag €21 down from €31.

River Island have some great discounts on winter coats at the moment. The cream puffer is half price at €60 and both the brown and pink coats are marked down from €95 to €45.

For sale shopping tips, check out my previous post and for online sale shopping hacks and discounts click here. I’ve rounded up some of the prices as decimal points frustrate me. 😛

Remember to check the returns policy, it will save you a lot of hassle. I recently attempted returning a full-price choker to Forever 21 only to find they don’t accept returns on jewellery.

It was in perfect condition, still in packaging and the receipt was in date! *shakes fist*

I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a lovely New Year also. Do you love or loathe sale shopping? Leave me a comment below.

PS- these are all my personal choices, I didn’t receive any payment or incentive to promote these brands. Thanks for reading as always and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

What to wear to a Christmas party: Festive Fashion Edit

Sick of all your dresses?  Contemplating wearing a Christmas jumper to the work do instead? Never fear, I have some Christmas outfit inspiration for you! And it’s not just dresses…

Sparkle always looks great at Christmas whether you choose a glittery accessory or a little sequin number. Glitter, sequins and embellishment are practically a requirement at this time of the year.

Folkster.com always have gorgeous glittery dresses in stock, ideal for a festive celebration.

These pink glittery shoes from Bershka add some festive cheer to any outfit. If you can’t afford to buy an entire new outfit for a Christmas party, these are only €29.99. A new statement accessory is great way to liven up an old outfit.

alt=

Christmas parties are synonymous with donning your best frock but a skirt and top combo can be equally glamorous. These sequin skirts from Pretty Little Thing are festive and fun.

Metallics also look great at Christmas like this patent silver mini from Bershka. This is a fitted skirt so a bodysuit is the best option for underneath.

alt=< silver mini skirt>

If you don’t like short skirts or glitzy dresses don’t feel pressured to wear one just for the Christmas party. Wear whatever you feel most confident in whether that’s a playsuit, jumpsuit, culottes or jeans and a top.

Longer skirts can be equally pretty like this sequined midi with tassel details from Zara. It has a side split but is not overly revealing.

alt=

These gorgeous emerald green culottes from Bershka are a lovely satin material and are a loose fit.

This perfect party top would look great with jeans, black trousers or culottes.

Culotte jumpsuits have been hugely popular this year and this rich burgundy one from Missguided is beautiful.

Missguided have come up trumps with this simple but elegant green cowl neck dress for €37.50.

alt=

They also have some fab dresses on sale right now. The black velvet and red bodycon dresses below are just €13.50 each!  The metallic plunge neck  one is just €22.50.

For my own Christmas party, I wore this black dress with floral detail and a deep mesh V neck. I actually bought this dress in Catch for €26 and it’s an exact dupe for one I spotted in River Island a couple of months back.

The only issue I had with this dress was the floral appliques are slightly loose in places and may come off!

The only differences are my dress has slightly less floral detail and a lower V neck. The River Island one was about €50-60 as I recall. Both dresses are similar to a Dolce & Gabbana one worn by both Kendall AND Kylie! Who knows, maybe they share clothes too…

Red and green hues, velvet and jewel details are all great for a Christmassy vibe. That said, if you look great in white lace just go for it!

Hope you all enjoyed this post and got some inspiration for a party outfit. Do you like getting dressed up for Christmas?  Leave me a comment below and let me know.

Enjoy the party season and if you have to work over Christmas, you have my sympathies. :/

Velvet Obsession

Velvet is back..but actually it never left! It’s the one timeless fabric that reappears every A/W without fail.Velvet adds a touch of luxury to an outfit and is great for dressy occasions.

Personally I like velvet so much that my confirmation outfit consisted of purple velvet suit, skinny flares and matching top. I wish you could have seen it… dopest confirmation outfit EVER.

These velvet dresses from Bershka are perfect for winter nights out, long sleeves, cosy velvet material and will work with black tights. Plus they’re plain so you can dress them up or down. I think they would look great with black boots. This is a fitted dress and the colours will work on most people.

While we associate velvet mainly with pretty dresses and dressy jackets, this year there are loads of casual velvet options. After all when Kendall wears it, mere mortals must follow. 😛

A velvet t-shirt looks great with blue jeans and more sophisticated than a regular cotton one. Scandi label Monki stocked at Asos have great velvet casualwear.

This green roundneck t-shirt from Shein.com is also gorgeous although I’d probably chop the ribbons off!

This Pins and Needles dress from Urban Outfitters is the ideal way of working a velvet item into your daily wardrobe.

It comes in black, grey and maroon. Tap into the 90’s trend by layering it or wear on its own for a party.

This velvet top with a mesh back from Nasty Gal is the ultimate in smart casual.

alt=

You may have seen how velvet ankle boots are springing up everywhere but velvet heels are a great alternative if you don’t wear ankle boots.

These teal blue pumps from Shein.com are just under €28. Bargain!

alt=

Good news for bardot top fans, it gets an A/W update in the form of velvet. This navy one from Shein.com is less than €12!

I’m  also hankering after a velvet camisole top to liven up my winter wardrobe. These grey and black camisoles are from Asos.

Missguided’s latest campaign features none other than Amber Rose showing her soft side in a pink velvet dress posing with a giant teddy.

There’s loads of velvet goodies on Missguided at the moment, from bombers (long and short), dresses, shoes and even underwear!

Monday to Friday: How to survive office clothing

“Office appropriate” are words that strike fear into my heart. How can you put together an appropriate work outfit without losing all of your style/femininity?

It’s easy for men, they can throw on a suit and it instantly transforms the plainest guy into a handsome one! The ladies however don’t have amazing alternatives.

Looking around Dublin on a week day you see some girls who take the conservative route and wear unflattering wide black pants, black top, plain black shoes….or a sombre suit with plain shoes. Others opt for the “sexy secretary” look and wear really high heels, see through blouses and tight/short skirts.

No disrespect intended to these ladies I discovered girls dress this way because we are given two alternatives in shops …see below!

 NSFW vs

serious business!

I recently had to buy some new office appropriate clothing and having not done so in several years it was a shock to me. I thought it would be easy to find some nice office wear and began my search in earnest.

It would’ve been easier find my way into Mordor than to find something that was both appropriate, reasonably priced and stylish!!

I know it's old and overdone, but this is very WELL done. So, I felt the need to share...

First stop Penneys…gahhhhhhh. All the blouses were see through and the basics looked really rough shirts with threads hanging off etc. I already know they have the world’s most unflattering black trousers so I didn’t look any further.

Then to Zara , I thought surely I will find something here maybe shoes if not clothes. But Zara had final reductions on sale and very little new stock.

They had some nice blazers but I already had picked up a H & M grey blazer for €5 in the charity shop. I spied what looked like the perfect navy shift dress, good length, on sale etc. I picked it up and realised it had a plunging neckline..almost down to the navel! Sob.

Even my charity shops were letting me down as I didn’t want to buy too many odd pieces that didn’t match.

Eventually I spotted a navy and white Next dress for €8.50 and grabbed it like a drowning man grabs a life buoy! I decided to wear this on Monday with a white pointelle cardigan from Penneys.

063 - Copy  065 - Copy

Feeling  frustrated I then went to Dorothy Perkins. It’s not somewhere I normally shop but I was desperate. Et voila work clothes on sale!

I finally found a nice dress just beyond the knee. It had hearts on the top but at this stage I didn’t care and bought it. In my role this is fine BUT if you work with a lot of men or in a very senior position avoid hearts, flowers and kittens! Easier said than done in fact 😛

It’s nice to be feminine and sexy but it’s very important to be taken seriously at work.It was €30 on sale  from €45 which I thought was reasonable. I also tried on trousers from the petite range but this is a “true” petite range i.e. they were too short for me and I am 5’4ish. I would recommend this range for petite girls however.

Next also do good petite sizes in office wear but their sizes are slightly bigger sizes than DP. Next have some really nice office wear available and good quality also but I didn’t have the money to buy there. I wore my dress with a black cardigan and a black blazer…Tuesday outfit!

This dress is a good length and has a sewn in camisole inside.

I then tried H & M also where I managed to find slightly cute shirts! There are so many lovely shirts for guys but very little for girls. I really like H & M’s clothing but had never noticed their formal wear before. I picked up a pale pink shirt for €14.95 with white cuffs and collar. I also bought it in grey as I liked it so much.I paired this with a black pencil skirt I already had.

I’ve found vintage shops are great for colourful blouses and shirts that can be incorporated into a working wardrobe. My favourite one has to be this paisley blouse from Lyon Loring for €26.

I was pleasantly surprised to find some nice office clothes in New Look and bought a plain white shirt which I layered under a textured black shift dress with gold trim for my Wednesday outfit. I saw some nice dresses and skirts here but was disappointed with a blue shift dress I tried on. It seemed to be my size(10)  but didn’t sit right over my hips and lower body and looked weird!

075

I had enough at that point so my Thursday outfit was one I already owned, a green fitted dress with zip details from Next and my H & M blazer.

078
It’s true : I cannot iron…

For those of you who have a “casual Friday” option here are some ideas I found on Pinterest. Dark jeans, a patterned trousers or shirts, knitwear and casual jackets are great for casual Friday.  A little colour is nice also especially if you wear black, white, navy etc. during the week!

Casual Friday work outfit with plaid button down, jeans, navy blazer, and camel pumps

love this- casual Friday work outfit

Do not forget to mix grey and taupe together. Love it. And add a little bit of silver!!! Perfect.

Please note: I do not own these images.

I have been wearing brogues to work ( I used to wear heels but I’ve been cured of this foolishness..) as I feel they are a smarter alternative to pumps and more comfy than heels.  Masculine tailoring is really trendy this spring and they are a great choice for work!

It is never ok to wear runners with office clothing even if you are walking/running/cycling to work: brogues are the way to go ladies!  Shoes are one way you can express your personality in an office 😉

087

Office shoe choices: l-r Dunnes black and gold pumps, Asos brogues and Stradivarius ballet pumps.

Handbags for the office!

084

Alternating between business like satchel and tote bag with room for everything!

And I finally bought myself a decent watch in Urban Outfitters

089

This is an amazing watch! Wanted it for ages! Real leather and quirky face: perfect for a little self-expression at work. 😉 My work jewellery is pretty muted but this adds a little colour!

I was completely exhausted by the time I finished shopping for my work clothes. I felt a bit frustrated with the choices aimed at female shoppers. I also think we need more office clothes for different body types…I love tailoring and smart clothes but I like to still be creative and a little glam also.

What do you think? Where do you buy formal/work clothes? I’d love to hear your opinions!

P.S. I finally got my Romwe birth of Venus jumper (see below) and I’m loving it! It’s a baggy fit, really nice with jeans. Thanks for dropping by and hope you enjoyed the post.
