Clueless Checks: The Autumn/Winter trend you’ve all been waiting for

To say that I like the movie Clueless is an understatement.

It is one of those films that always puts a big cheesy smile on my face, it’s full of hilarious moments, amazing fashion and has that feel-good factor.

I can relate to Dionne’s terrible driving and sassy one-liners, Tai’s awkward adorableness and Cher’s comedic outbursts and shopping addiction.

And of course, the outfits are a whole mood by themselves.

alt=
Clueless outfits

So, you can imagine my delight to see Clueless-style checks everywhere in the shops recently.

alt=< cher-horowitz-dionne>

While bright yellow checks aren’t the easiest look to rock, brown Burberry-style ones are much easier to wear.

Obviously, the most iconic Cher look is the plaid mini-kilt so I had to get my hands on one.

I picked up this miniskirt in Penneys during the week after seeing it on a colleague.

alt=<plaid-miniskirt-primark>
Penneys plaid miniskirt

I think it will look great with this white v-neck top also from Penneys and ankle boots for autumn/winter.

alt=<primark-white-vneck-top>

The only thing I’m cautious about is the front so I think I would probably stick to black tights with this one in case of wardrobe malfunctions!

The skirt was €12 while the top was €6 so a whole outfit for under €20.

And I also love this yellow check look although the skirt looks like it would only fit a four-year-old!

Asos, of course, have the look nailed with this adorable yellow check co-ord set.

Team the skirt with 90s style clunky sandals or black Converse high-tops.

alt=

Shop in sterling and nab the whole outfit for just under €60.

If you aren’t a mini-kilt kinda gal, then these cute pink check shorts allow you to get your legs out but still be comfy.

Pair with a bumbag or mini rucksack for ultimate Cher vibes. These are €23 from Nasty Gal.

And if you want to go all out, this square neck lilac check dress from Boohoo.com is just the ticket.

At just €20, it won’t break the bank!

alt=

Another option for a glam night out is this plaid crop leg jumpsuit from Romwe.com.

This is currently reduced from €32.45 to €11.

alt=

This double-breasted blazer is a great piece to dress up or down and is €38 from Boohoo.com.

Unfortunately, the double-breasted style can be hard to pull off but everyone who can wear it, I salute you!

For a more subtle look, try this sweet check pinafore from Bershka reduced from €24.99 to only €9.99 in sale.

Pinafore and dungaree dresses are really trendy at the moment and suit most shapes and sizes.

&OtherStories is one of my favourite shops for really cool fashion-forward pieces.

These chunky plaid platforms are quite expensive at €89 but they are a real statement piece.

Finally, for autumn/winter this “waistcoat” (I think it’s a dress) looks great layered over turtlenecks or on its own with black tights.

I found this on Stradivarius’ Armenian site (don’t ask) but converted to euro it comes in at €46.

Fishnet Frenzy

It may be one of the most bizarre trends of 2016 but fishnet tights underneath jeans are having a sartorial moment. And if someone told me that a year ago, I’d have thought they were certifiably insane!

When I bought a pair of fishnet tights for my Halloween outfit I didn’t think I’d ever be wearing them again. Little did I know…

But with this unseasonably warm weather, there’s never been a better time to try it out! Last week I decided to dig out mine and layer them under baggy Zara jeans with ripped knees.

Halfway to town I shed my coat and scarf, it was ROASTING but at least my legs were cool in the fishnet and rips combo! I may have gotten the odd strange look but not as many as I’d anticipated.

There are several ways to wear fishnets and jeans. They can be layered under loose ripped jeans or pulled up over the waistband of your jeans with a crop top or cropped hoody.

Blue or black jeans in a boyfriend or mom fit work best with this combination.

For a more daring look, jeans with cut-out panels will showcase your fishnets also.

alt=

You can customise old jeans by ripping them up or chopping out a side panel if you want to experiment with this look.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOAer_vB42r/?tagged=fishnets

Fishnet socks with runners or loafers are really cute and don’t require you to freeze to death or flash flesh. They look especially good with raw hem or cropped jeans.White fishnet socks are also great with runners.

alt=<black fishnets>
Black fishnet socks with Gucci loafers. Pic: Pinterest.com

A white t-shirt, cropped hoody or long coat all compliment this look. Casual flats or runners are the best accompaniment.

Fishnet tights come in all sizes and colours so don’t feel you have to conform to the bog standard black ones. Red ones look great with blue jeans and white or nude fishnets are more subtle. You can even get embellished crystallized fishnets on Etsy.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOCM65ZACcy/?tagged=fishnets

My fishnets were €7.99 from H & M but you can get them in most shops. If you’re having trouble finding some, then just hit up Ann Summers you’re bound to get them there!

You can buy fishnet socks and oversize fishnet tights on Asos.com. I really like these as they have a reinforced toe making them less likely to rip.

Fishnets are actually quite versatile and when it gets warmer I’ll be wearing mine with skirts and vintage Levis cut-offs. The downsides are they rip easily, are handwash only and can leave a diamond imprint on your legs and waist!

What do you guys make of this trend? Would you try it out? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

The Unwearables: Ski pants, puffer jackets and popper trackies!

I don’t know about you but I almost fell off my chair when I saw an article featuring ski pants on Vogue.com! This winter, prepare to see ski pants, puffer jackets and even button up tracksuit pants are making an appearance.

The ladies over at TownMouse CountryMouse Ireland forecasted the ski pants trend sometime ago by the way.

Now I love a good throwback so I’m doing my best to embrace this look.

Anywhere I’ve seen ski pants featured, they’re styled with a heel but I can’t help thinking the skinny styles are still unflattering….and don’t get me started on fashion editorials where the stirrup is wrapped around a heel!

alt=
Black skinny ski pants. Pic: Mango.com

Personally I think they look good in a looser leg with a mule type shoe or with runners in traditional nineties style. They do compliment heeled loafers also.

If you really want to go for the Alps/Aspen look, then you’ll need a giant puffy jacket as well! Take Kenny from South Park as your inspo and you’re on the right track.

I’m normally not a fan of either of puffers or parkas but this season’s ones are cute and girly like this pink River Island one.

This is the ultimate winter jacket, it’s a gorgeous colour, super warm and a great length. I tried it on yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was.

alt=

It also looks very nice with a pop of pink lipstick! FYI, €120 but I would buy it if I could afford it! (I bought it in the end thanks to Asos’s Black Friday discount 😉

alt=
I love the fluffy collar!

This Balenciaga ad manages to combine both puffer jacket and ski pants-impressed!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLAQg-sB8iZ/?tagged=pufferjacket

Padded/Puffer jackets look best in a matte material, the shiny ones just look a bit cheap and tacky. Steer clear!

Slogans add some fun detail like this Topshop one. Oh and the bigger the better or otherwise it’s not a puffer jacket!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLMDCw0DFcB/?tagged=pufferjacket

We’ve all seen that photo of Kim in her Adidas trackies and bizarre as it is I have to say it’s one of her better outfits. She almost looks semi-comfortable unlike when she’s squeezed herself into nude cycling shorts and sock boots…shudder!

Can they actually make a comeback? Is this a throwback too far?! Where did Kim even find them…in a museum?!

To top off all this, the shoes of the season are clunky heeled loafers. Let that sink in.  Loafers aren’t the prettiest of shoes but they are damn smart! These classic black ones from Zara are one of my favourites this year. They are €49.95.

alt=
Black loafer. Pic: Zara.com

Even if you’re not a massive fan, you have to admit they’re better than mules or flats with ballet laces…and those are your other two choices shoe lovers!

Backless styles are a nightmare, stick to a traditional black embellished loafer or mix it up with these colourful Topshop ones.

To be honest, there are ways to style even the most “unwearable” of trends! The only things I will say an emphatic no to are the aforementioned awful lace-up ballet shoes.

Let’s all say it together: NO!

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of these trends. Thanks as always for reading my blog and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

Born Slippy: The Slip Dress Trend

I love anything to do with Clueless (just look at my Twitter) and the revival of nineties layering and slip dresses is what I’ve been dreaming of.

The real champion of the slip dress was, of course, Kate Moss.

The waif-like supermodel could wear a satin slip like no other. Bow down, bitches.

Nowadays, Kylie Jenner has single-handedly raised slip dresses from the dead. She’s probably also responsible for that whole bandana craze.

Simple black and white make for a great combination but feel free to mix it up with colours and different styles of dress.

I found this red Guess silk slip dress for €2 in my local charity shop. I layered it with a long top, sheer tights and Doc Martens.

Topshop currently has lots of slip dresses. PS if you haven’t been to new revamped Topshop on Stephen’s Green, GO NOW!

I can’t write a blog post without including something floral so here’s a little beauty from Miss Selfridge.

I knew I needed help for my floral addiction when this happened…

Naturally, Urban Outfitters have their finger on the pulse with this fashion-forward black slip dress.

Peach and champagne colour slip dresses are a nice alternative to black and look great with a tan.

These dresses look best with bare legs and simple shoes, ideally flats.

Slip dresses don’t have to be super short either, laid-back style doesn’t get much better than this Boohoo midi.

If your slip dress resembles a nightdress/lingerie, all the better.

Satin, silk and lace trims are all good, just keep the rest of the outfit classy.

Other ways to do 90’s layering are wearing a vest over a t-shirt a la Cher, pinafore dresses over t-shirts and throw on a bandana as an accessory.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this post, leave me a comment and let me know! I can’t believe it’s taken me three years to devote an entire blog post to Clueless 😛

I’ve been longlisted for the Blog Awards again this year so thanks for the nominations, I’m delighted.

Gianni Versace: Paying homage to the legendary designer

Someone once asked me who my favourite designer was and I had to think.

I don’t believe in blindly buying designer items just because they’re expensive or being in head to toe in designer clothing.

Naturally, my bank balance doesn’t permit me to own any designer clothing anyway but I do have a fab DKNY rucksack which I got for €6!

90s versace

But back to my favourite designers: I have two.

Moschino is my current favourite but Gianni Versace has to be my all time favourite designer. I love his scarf prints and 90’s designs.

Versace is not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s garish (some would say tacky!), loud, colourful and in your face.

The jewellery is gold and ostentatious but that’s what makes it so great!

versace

I think the 80s and 90s supermodels were far edgier and I love shots like these.

Naomi, Kate, Christy, Claudia, Linda et al. have a lot more attitude than the doe-eyed blank faces of Gigi and Kendall and the attention-seeking Cara Delevinge.

The most Versace-inspired item I own is this Topshop scarf print dress which everyone who saw it fell in love with!

I also have this gorgeous green jacket which was about €6 from a charity shop and comes out every summer! (These photos are from the early days of the blog..)

So, if you’re looking to get your paws on some Versace lookalikes, the best place to try is Etsy or Ebay.

Reworked sports bras are really popular right now such as this one from seller babydollcc.

Although if you have the sewing know-how something like this can easily be created at home!

reworked versace
Img: Etsy.com

Versace was influenced by Greek mythology and that is why the Versace logo is the head of Medusa.

This Versace style t-shirt would look great with jeans and flats.

Available from flowertea65 on Etsy.

If you are in search of a real Versace piece online be careful some shops may use the word “Versace” to describe a piece but their item is listed as “Versace-style” or “not associated with any brand name.”

Personally, I think buying second-hand designer online is risky and would try a high-end second-hand shop such as Siopaella or Portobello rather than an unknown.

Their sites are reliable and have genuine pre-owned designer items.

The shirts below are all vintage Versace style, available from SuccessDress on Etsy.

Genuine Versace jewellery can be found online! Bags and watches can fetch thousands.

Even Versace buttons can be found for sale on eBay.

These Greek god head earrings are only €9.90 from The Flea Style Market, I’m getting a pair as soon as payday arrives.

alt=

Nine Crow St also have some jewellery in this style.

Or this chunky gold chain from Bershka.

I bought these stunning Versace style heels from Missguided but had to return them as the heel was really thin and I couldn’t walk in them!

They were from the premium Peace + Love collection but they weren’t better quality than any other shoes you’d buy online from a similar site.

Hope you all enjoyed this post, I updated it because I’ve been watching The Assassination of Gianni Versace and I’m obsessed!

I want to go to Miami and visit the mansion..maybe one day!

If you want to leave me a comment my comment icon is the grey speech bubble icon on the bottom right, it can be hard to see on this theme.

My next post will be on Angel Haze’s Academy gig, really excited for this.

Thanks for visiting and don’t forget you can follow me on  InstagramTwitter and like my Facebook page here.

The 90s style: Still preoccupied with 1995

While watching the video for “Hideaway” by the amazing Kiesza, I was struck by the 90s vibe.

90s and grunge fashion are really making a resurgence for better or worse. From the moment Miley Cyrus appeared with hair buns at the VMA’s last year, it was obvious the ’90s were back with a bang.

With that in mind, here’s a nostalgic 90’s post featuring the good, the bad and the ugly!

I’m 26 so I grew up in the ’90s and had a lot of fun with trends such as plastic chokers, bandanas, combat pants, dungarees, scrunchies, hair mascara, face glitter, etc.

90's chokers. i used to have a blue one and wore it all the time
Y’all ready for this?? Pic: Tumblr.com

I love 90s style but I’d like to get the balance right between “90s” and “reverting to childhood.” When I noticed girls around town wearing plastic chokers I was like…

Gif: Gifsoup.com

I’d actually prefer these bad boys to make a comeback..here’s hoping!

These happened in the late '90s and sometimes offered magical healing properties. They totally worked.- 34 pieces of super 90's jewelry

Here are a few memories for you all and a guide to incorporating the 90s into your current wardrobes without making the mistakes you made the first time around. 😉

Bright eyeshadow, big shoes and wacky outfits…I loved them soooo much 😥 It was never really about the music with the Spice Girls, it was all about the attitude!

Hahahahaha

90s Gwen Stefani is so on trend for spring :: Fashion news - Cosmopolitan
Ultimate 90s girl.

Has anything ever looked bad on Gwen Stefani? (No. The answer is no.)

Even in the ’90s, Gwen was still amazing!

Drew Barrymore, 90s

So now that we’ve all had a significant dose of nostalgia, what trends should be allowed to come back??

All hail the humble scrunchie, this much-maligned hair accessory is back. Scrunchies are on Instagram, Etsy and every cool girl you know.

Adorned make amazing scrunchies in all fabrics and patterns-check them out. Be warned you must have long and preferably thick hair to rock a scrunchie.

But you can always wear one on your wrist if you want, the ultimate primary school flex!

boucle scrunchie
Scrunchie from Adorned Vintage on Etsy. Pic: Adorned Vintage

Asos Marketplace is the perfect place to find 90’s clothes, it’s chock-a-block with independent retailers selling vintage and reworked clothing.

Dungarees and tie-dye can look really good if handled with caution. I’m a massive fan of grunge so big baggy denim jackets, oversized jumpers and ripped jeans are fine by me

Fresh in Temple Bar always have a great selection of grunge and tie-dye items.

10648323_837244719652919_1176076417379517622_o

Big baggy jumpers with abstract patterns like this one from We Are Hairy People are fundamental in creating a 90s look.

The best thing about 90s clothing is it’s perfectly acceptable to wear clothing at least three sizes too big for you, comfort and nonchalance is key in pulling off this look. Wearing men’s jumpers works also. 😛

Sports slogans and sporty jackets are another easy way to inject some 90s style into your look.

adidas

If you still need to be convinced and you think “I’d never wear a turtleneck”, take a look at 9 Crow Street’s amazing “94” lookbook.

This will not only make you want to wear 90s clothes, it will make you want to time travel back to the 90s! You’re welcome 😉

9 Crow St. Pic: NineCrows.com

So that’s my take on the great revival, I’d like to see the beanie hats, plastic chokers and butterfly clips remain in the past but there are so many other trends I’d really welcome back.
