Denim Daze: Why we should embrace the return of denim

When you think of denim clothing and accessories, what comes to mind?

B*witched at their finest? Line dancing? Or THAT iconic Britney and Justin outfit?

Name a more iconic duo I’ll wait. Pic: Tumblr.com

If that trip down memory lane is giving you denim-induced PTSD, I’m sorry. But denim is back and trust me it’s much better this time around.

Denim has been gracing the catwalks this season with everyone from Philip Lim to Victoria Beckham hopping on the bandwagon.

In my humble opinion, the safest way to work this trend is a statement accessory and keep the rest of your outfit simple.

This cute embellished one from Shein.com is only €17, total bargain!

If you prefer your denim with more attitude, then check out this dark denim “Not Your Babe” bag from Skinnydip.

alt=

Or if you want something much simpler, check out this light blue Miss Selfridge bucket bag, on sale from €40 to €21.

alt=

If you are looking for a Fenty X Puma dupe, then these denim trainers from Shein.com could be just the ticket. Currently reduced from €57 to €35.

alt=
Denim shoes. Pic: Shein.com

If I could wear a heel right now, I’d drop everything for these adorable yet versatile denim mules from Nasty Gal.

Fraying, floral embroidery and a low heel, they have it all! I would definitely be packing them in my suitcase for holidays if I could.

alt=

One of my favourite summer shoe brands has to be Soludos for their espadrilles. Soludos are available from Asos and Shopbop and while they are pricey, they appear to be good quality.

They’re significantly cheaper on Shopbop.com but I’m not sure how much delivery costs.

FYI, Asos is offering 20 percent off selected shoes at the moment.

I’m not a huge fan of all the denim heeled boots around, I think they look a bit trampy (Gabby from Love Island I’m talking to you).

Denim heels are hard to pull off but I do like these sandals from Nasty Gal, I think they’d be cute with a plain slip dress.

FYI, Nasty Gal are currently offering 50 percent off everything, including sale.

alt=

If denim accessories aren’t for you, then you can’t beat the classics, like a statement denim jacket, shorts or a denim mini skirt.

I haven’t worn a denim mini in years but they are making a big comeback (Amber from Love Island knows what I mean) and these are a few I really like.

Inject some sass into your shorts, with an embellished pair like these fishnet layer ones from Topshop or this lace-up pair from Nasty Gal.

An embellished denim jacket is yet another item I have to add to my wardrobe.

I think this River Island one is probably the most festival-worthy item I’ve seen in a long time – what do you think?

alt=
Embellished denim jacket. Pic: River Island.com

I’m also completely crushing on these beauties, a Daisy Street medium blue denim jacket from Asos, a light blue denim with a graffiti style print from Nasty Gal and this perfect pink denim jacket with a frill embellishment.

UPDATE: I ordered the pink frill one but it’s very short and I prefer my denim jackets a lot looser. The colour was also more of a peach than pink so I returned it.

Hope you guys enjoyed this denim edit and are feeling inspired to introduce some more denim into your wardrobes. Let me know what you think – love it or leave it?

I hope to do a festival post soon and I’m off to Biarritz next month so I will have some holiday photos and hopefully, some outfit posts coming up.

Things are going much better for me, my ankle is finally healing so I’m very happy and relieved about that.

Thanks for reading as always and don’t forget to check out my Facebook pageInstagram and Twitter.

River Island High Summer Press Day

Last week I had a chance to attend the River Island High Summer event in the Grafton Street store and I was thrilled to go as River Island is one of my favourite shops.

Not only that, but I might be going on a real holiday this year so I needed some inspiration.

I took along my new (well second-hand) Canon camera for the occasion but my photos actually came out brighter on my phone so I obviously need more practice with my camera shutter!

There were five main ladieswear collections, my favourite rail was full of beautiful embellished pieces, such as a beaded skirt and white jeans with pearls on them. The dominant colours on this rail were cream, white, coral and silver.

alt=

alt=

alt=

Then there was a holiday rail with some bright casual wear, among the pieces which caught my eye were a purple tie-dye jumper and a black mesh skirt with sequin pineapples on it.

There were more holiday pieces mixed in around the room adding to the summery vibe.

Across the room was a rail of gorgeous palm and floral print pieces which I obviously loved.

Remember my last trend post where I said embellished denim jackets were the next big thing?

If you want one that really stands out, then look out for this pale blue denim jacket with pearls and crystals of different sizes and shapes on the back. I am OBSESSED with it.

alt=

Beside this were some bright pink shorts, some lilac colours and skirts covered in sequin discs.

There was also a fabulous pink denim jacket and shorts set pinned to the wall.

alt=

There were also some nice accessories such as a pink floral suitcase, pink floral backpack and my favourite accessory was a white satchel bag with western style buckles.

alt=

The key trends in accessories were pastel colours, fluffy sliders and mules, gingham and floral patterns.

alt=

The bikinis on display were pretty cute also.

We were offered a selection of tasty treats including mini brioches and a refreshing pineapple and cucumber juice with an umbrella- totally summery!

There was also a customisation station where you could pick a pair of sandals to decorate with flowers, ribbon, plastic eyes, whatever you fancied!

The fluffy sliders were a big hit with everyone. Although I probably wouldn’t wear them myself, I do think they add a bit of fun to a holiday wardrobe.

alt=

It was a lot of fun and the girls customising the shoes were really helpful. There were green ferns draped on the walls and a bright pink flamingo adding a touch of colour.

The mannequins were beautifully dressed and the one to the left of the door really caught my eye.

It was wearing a white lacy bardot top with wide sleeves, charcoal grey loose-fitting shorts and a gingham belt. It was a simple but classy outfit, ideal for holidays or festivals.

Beside this mannequin was a rail with gingham, light wash denims, muted colours, light knitwear and some printed and beaded pieces.

I quite liked this collection also, it had a hippie folk vibe, again great for festivals. Just above this collection were beautiful Gucci-esque embroidered loafers.

alt=

The kids’ collection was full of funky sparkly items and sequin disc embellishment.

There was a lot of formal items but my favourite outfit was an adorable girl’s red gingham blouse teamed with black denim shorts on the wall.

The kids’ backpacks and shoes were very cute, I especially liked the white laser-cut boots and bronze rucksack on top of the display.

alt=

I only had a quick glance at the menswear as there was just one rail on show.

alt=

The only thing I thought the collection lacked was jewellery, River Island has the cutest inexpensive jewellery and I didn’t see any on display. However there were lots of other summer appropriate accessories, hats, sunglasses, espadrilles etc.

I really enjoyed the event and got lots of inspiration for my holiday wardrobe.

Thanks to the River Island team for such a nice day and being very welcoming.

Hope you all enjoyed this brief post and let me know if you like the collections and I’d love to hear your feedback on the photos.

P.S. thanks for the supportive comments on my last post. I was a bit anxious about putting that much personal information about myself on my blog but I’ve received nothing but kind comments. So thanks again guys, your support means the world to me.

An injection of FUN: The latest S/S ’17 trends

Gingham, pink, embellished jackets and oriental prints: all kinds of whimsical and fun trends are in fashion this spring.

While I was out shopping for graduation dresses, I got quite distracted by all the new trends in town and thought I’d do a post to share them with you.

By the way, there’s a grand stretch in the evenings altogether!

One trend I really love so far is gingham. Particularly if it comes in the shape of a bardot top or has a few frills on it.

I can get on board with a head-to-toe ensemble either. Yaasss.

alt=
Gingham mini skirt. Pic: Lasula Snapchat

These Topshop gingham blouses are great for casual wear or dressy occasions.

Blue, pink or red gingham and simple gingham sundresses are also cute.

alt=>
Blue gingham crop top. Pic: Prettylittlething.com

Gingham looks great layered over plain colours or as a contrast to a white or black t-shirt.

gingham dress

Let’s observe the fact  that even Christian Louboutin created a pair of country gal style gingham Louboutins.

alt=

Oriental prints are another huge trend this spring also. I’m a big fan of this royal blue backpack from New Look and pink high heel sandals from River Island.

alt=
Pink oriental print sandals. Pic: River Island.com

This backpack is €24.99 and also comes in pink.

alt=

These Kimchi Blue dresses from Urban Outfitters are also really adorable and perfect for summer.

Oriental prints are notoriously difficult to wear so try a simple accessory like this Shein wallet if you don’t want to go overboard.

alt=

But if you do want to go all out check O-Mighty’s cute co-ord sets.

Bright pink is a really popular colour this spring, especially in co-ords, jackets and oversized jumpers.

This little pink suede biker from New Look is a great transitional piece.

alt=
Pink suede jacket.

I love the contrast of the red embroidered letters against the bright pink background on this Bershka jumper.

alt=<Bershka-pink-sweater>

Bershka is your destination for all things pink and cosy, I’m also tempted by these goodies.

How cute is this little pink Shein t-shirt with a cactus detail?

alt=

Finally, embellished denim and leather jackets are everywhere this spring. Think lace-ups, patches, floral and slogans.

I absolutely love these and need at least one in my life!

This denim jacket with black lace-up ties running up the sleeves and across the back is amazing. #need

alt=

I’m a massive Tove Lo fan so this Junkyard slogan jacket really appeals to me.

alt=

As frequent readers know I love a good Etsy original and it’s definitely the best place to find a one-of-a-kind jacket.

The skull jacket is from Corazon Beats on Etsy and the desert scene jacket is from LivingRoomCompany.

And when I win the lottery, I’ll be off to buy this Gucci denim beauty.

alt=<embroidered jacket>

If you prefer leather jackets, you’ll like these embellished styles from Bershka and Forever 21.

What do you think of these spring trends? Do you have a favourite? Leave me a comment and let me know.

P.S. I finally bought myself a camera so look forward to some more outfit posts and more of my own style on here. It’s something I’ve wanted to introduce to the site for a long time.

FYI- this post was not sponsored or endorsed by any brands mentioned.

I will conclude this spring-themed post with some adorable baby ducks because we all need those in our lives.

Hope you all enjoyed this post and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

Bargain Alert: Nasty Gal’s 70% off liquidation sale

You may have heard that Nasty Gal have gone bankrupt and they are about to be taken over by Boohoo.com.

It’s surprising to see the site go bust considering they once pulled in $85 million in revenue.

Nasty Gal’s entrepreneurial founder and self-titled #Girlboss, Sophia Amoruso seemed like she could do no wrong at one point.

Her book #Girlboss topped bestseller lists and there’s even talk of a Netflix show based on her life.

But every cloud has a silver lining and this one comes in the form of a 70% off everything sale, (including previous sale items) as the company scrambles to offload their stock.

Here’s a few of the bargains available but you’ll have to be quick, the stock is flying out!

alt=
Sequin and bead top. Pic: Nastygal.com

This gorgeous vintage style top was €109 but is only €32.70 with discount. It’s still available in sizes M-XL.

It’s a real statement piece and would be ideal for a special occasion.

alt=
Black glittery blouse. Pic: NastyGal.com

This sheer glittery blouse was already  reduced to €54 so it’s only  €16.20 with discount.

This is still available in L and XL.

alt=
Floral tattoo applique top. Pic: NastyGal.com

This lace crop top with floral tattoo appliques is the stuff of dreams.

Unfortunately for me, it’s only left in a XS.

€18.30 with discount, pretty damn sweet!

alt=
White peasant blouse. Pic: NastyGal.com

Nasty Gal have lots of sexy styles but also some really cool bohemian stuff like this pretty peasant blouse.

This is still available in a size small and is less than a tenner!

alt=
Rosa boots. Pic: Nastygal.com

If you’re a size 7 and looking for some statement ankle boots, then these Rosa boots are just what you need.

These are a third of the original price, only €46.50 right now. However, there’s only size 7 left. *sobs quietly*

alt=
Oxblood lace up leggings.

I think these lace-up leggings would be hard to pull off but I do love the style.

These are €30.30 in final sale and only left in XS. They’re also left in a cream colour but I think they’d be even harder to pull off!

alt=
Studded jacket. Pic: Nastygal.com

This studded denim jacket is very festival-friendly and less than €20!

You’d be hard pressed to find anything under €20 in Nasty Gal’s heyday…

This is only left in S.

FYI, there are NO returns or exchanges on any of the items. The 70% discount is applied at the checkout.

Be aware that a lot of items listed on the site are sold out already and when I clicked on several available items, it said only 1 or 2 left.

Standard shipping is €14.95 to Ireland.

Many of labels stocked on Nasty Gal will be still available elsewhere, i.e. Lavish Alice, Glamorous, Jaded London all have their own sites so it’s not the end of the road for these brands.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction Boohoo will take, will they completely reinvent it or try to recreate Amoruso’s magic formula?

Did you shop from Nastygal? Are you sorry to see it go? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

PS- this isn’t a sponsored post.

UPDATE: The sale is now over but the new site had been launched with loads of new stock. Let me know what you guys think of the new look – personally I think it’s very similar to PLT and Missguided.

Thank you for visiting my blog and  don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

Wrapping up warm:OOTD at Dublin Zoo

What’s the only thing better than clothes? Why clothes and cute animals of course!

A trip to Dublin Zoo in December calls for a practical and warm outfit. Some colour co-ordination is vital also of course.

You may have seen this pink jacket with fur collar in my previous posts and on my social media. I’ve been obsessing about it for so long and finally bought it in Asos’s Black Friday sale.

zoo-ootd-2

Of course I had to pair with some Penneys accessories. Well half this outfit is Penneys actually…

My  khaki green hat has a pink rose embroidered on the side which matched my coat and bag perfectly. As for the houndstooth scarf, about 2/3 of the female population own this by now… If you’re reading this, you too are probably wearing it!

alt=

Both the hat and scarf are from Penneys and were €5 each. My trusty tote bag is from Bershka and usually doubles up as a shopping bag. However for a day like this, a rucksack is a better choice. This one hurt my arms dragging it around all day!

To complete the outfit I’m wearing black push-up jeans from Bershka which were €5.99 in sale and fit like a glove.

I find myself wearing these simple white runners from Penneys almost everyday. They are a great basic item that go with every outfit and if you squint a bit they could be Stan Smiths…. 😛

The outfit was perfect for the cold weather and kept me cosy while we strolled around. I hadn’t been to the zoo since primary school (despite the fact I live within 10 mins walk!) and I really enjoyed it.

I actually had my Christmas jumper on underneath this outfit but it was way too cold to show it off! Which is a shame as I consider it quite stylish.

Winter is actually a good time to visit the zoo as it’s not crowded and there are no school tours! That didn’t deter some very excited children from banging on a glass pane at a bewildered gorilla though…

Here are just a few of the gorgeous animals we saw from and you may find them a lot more interesting than my outfit! 😛

orangutangs

alt=

alt=

alt=

I may have developed somewhat of a fixation with monkeys during this trip but how cute are this little troop just chilling by the lake?!

alt=

alt=

The zoo has an amazing array of creatures from orangutans to okapis and everything in between.

The zoo farm is a small section with all the regular farmyard animals, such as goats and cows. Here I embarrassed myself by mistaking a pig for a Shetland pony and a statue of a sheep for a donkey! I think I need to get my eyes tested…

alt=

alt=<bongo deer Dublin zoo>

After the zoo excursion, I headed out to a friend’s birthday in House. Here’s my #OOTN for good measure! I’m wearing a halterneck top with beaded fringing from a charity shop, black leather pants from H&M and my holographic shoes from Missguided.

This may be my final post before Christmas so just hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and thanks for your support throughout the year.

For more zoo photos and possibly some OOTDs, check out my Instagram. Don’t forget you can follow me on Twitter and keep up with the blog on Facebook here. Thanks so much for reading and feel free to leave me a comment below.

Leopards never change their spots

If I could describe how wearing leopard print makes me feel in one word, it’d be empowered. From Pat Butcher to Hollywood femme fatales, leopard print has always been a trademark of a strong confident woman.

Some may say it’s trashy, I say it’s sassy. If you too want to feel sassy this winter, then you need to add at least one leopard print piece to your wardrobe.

Being the fashion fortuneteller that I am, I picked up a vintage leopard print blouse in the Tola Vintage kilo sale in Galway. I haven’t worn it yet but now it’s on trend and will look amazing with black jeans and boots.

alt=
Leopard print blouse from Tola Vintage.

I’ve styled it with my oversize denim jacket and a Stella McCartney lookalike bag that my housemate kindly brought me back from holidays.

alt=
The leopard print looks great with an oversize denim jacket.

If you feel anxious about wearing leopard print, try a subtle pattern or a leopard print accessory first. Devotees can head straight for the faux fur coats!

These are some of my favourite leopard print lovelies on the high street at the moment. This Topshop belt would look great on blue or black jeans for a subtle leopard print accent.

alt=

If you want to go all out, then a leopard coat is the best way to make a statement.

Topshop have this fabulous faux fur one for €125. Definitely the most glamorous way to stay warm on a chilly winter night out !

alt=<topshop leopard coat>

If that’s completely out of your budget, here are two less expensive options. This brown leopard coat with an oversize collar is €84 from Missguided.

alt=

Bershka have a shorter style with a bold print for €59.99.

alt=< Bershka faux fur coat>

I also love this delicate leopard print blouse from Bershka. It’s only €19.99 and doubles up as workwear.

alt=

River Island have some great leopard print items, including this cosy looking stole which is a great alternative to a woolly scarf.

alt=<leopard print stole>

This biker beaury is courtesy of Zara, I’m dying to get this myself. I’ve seen Niamh Cullen from BehindtheBraids wearing it and it looked stunning on her! It’s not biker season but I digress…

alt=
Zara biker jacket.

For a daring night out look, I love this bardot playsuit from Missguided, €30.80.

alt=<leopard print playsuit>

No trend post of mine is complete without a few footwear options naturally. Topshop have great leather ankle boots for just under €100.

For a casual option, try these leopard lace-ups from Asos, on sale right now for just under €20!

The Unwearables: Ski pants, puffer jackets and popper trackies!

I don’t know about you but I almost fell off my chair when I saw an article featuring ski pants on Vogue.com! This winter, prepare to see ski pants, puffer jackets and even button up tracksuit pants are making an appearance.

The ladies over at TownMouse CountryMouse Ireland forecasted the ski pants trend sometime ago by the way.

Now I love a good throwback so I’m doing my best to embrace this look.

Anywhere I’ve seen ski pants featured, they’re styled with a heel but I can’t help thinking the skinny styles are still unflattering….and don’t get me started on fashion editorials where the stirrup is wrapped around a heel!

alt=
Black skinny ski pants. Pic: Mango.com

Personally I think they look good in a looser leg with a mule type shoe or with runners in traditional nineties style. They do compliment heeled loafers also.

If you really want to go for the Alps/Aspen look, then you’ll need a giant puffy jacket as well! Take Kenny from South Park as your inspo and you’re on the right track.

I’m normally not a fan of either of puffers or parkas but this season’s ones are cute and girly like this pink River Island one.

This is the ultimate winter jacket, it’s a gorgeous colour, super warm and a great length. I tried it on yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was.

alt=
Pink puffer jacket. Pic: River Island.com

It also looks very nice with a pop of pink lipstick! FYI, €120 but I would buy it if I could afford it! (I bought it in the end thanks to Asos’s Black Friday discount 😉

alt=
I love the fluffy collar!

This Balenciaga ad manages to combine both puffer jacket and ski pants-impressed!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLAQg-sB8iZ/?tagged=pufferjacket

Padded/Puffer jackets look best in a matte material, the shiny ones just look a bit cheap and tacky. Steer clear!

Slogans add some fun detail like this Topshop one. Oh and the bigger the better or otherwise it’s not a puffer jacket!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLMDCw0DFcB/?tagged=pufferjacket

We’ve all seen that photo of Kim in her Adidas trackies and bizarre as it is I have to say it’s one of her better outfits. She almost looks semi-comfortable unlike when she’s squeezed herself into nude cycling shorts and sock boots…shudder!

Can they actually make a comeback? Is this a throwback too far?! Where did Kim even find them…in a museum?!

To top off all this, the shoes of the season are clunky heeled loafers. Let that sink in.  Loafers aren’t the prettiest of shoes but they are damn smart! These classic black ones from Zara are one of my favourites this year. They are €49.95.

alt=
Black loafer. Pic: Zara.com

Even if you’re not a massive fan, you have to admit they’re better than mules or flats with ballet laces…and those are your other two choices shoe lovers!

Backless styles are a nightmare, stick to a traditional black embellished loafer or mix it up with these colourful Topshop ones.

To be honest, there are ways to style even the most “unwearable” of trends! The only things I will say an emphatic no to are the aforementioned awful lace-up ballet shoes.

alt=
Pic: Zara.com

Let’s all say it together: NO!

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of these trends. Thanks as always for reading my blog and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

Festival Frolics

“I want to look weird…but not too weird!” (Two Irish girls discussing festival fashion.)

Dressing for festivals is great fun as it allows you to explore different styles and wear something you might not have considered previously.  Have fun but be mindful and respectful , don’t appropriate an entire other culture!

I’m  considering Longitude again or maybe Tennants Vital as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are playing…hmm… #decisions

Wherever I go, I’m going to dress the part. While I was in Edinburgh, I visited the Topshop on Prince’s St and got loads of ideas for festival outfits.

This shiny mac is perfect as a cover-up.

IMG_20160601_151447643_HDR

It would look deadly over this crochet top.

IMG_20160601_151440486

For festivals, I love a playsuit or a t-shirt and high-waisted shorts combo. The pastel playsuit is from H&M and the shorts and Star Wars t-shirt are both Penneys.

Festivals also call for sequins so what could be better than these Topshop shorts with turquoise sequins or the matching denim jacket?

IMG_0713

A sequin bomber is right up my street and this one from We All Shine is also available at Topshop.

This PrettyLittleThing top is on my wishlist, I’m buying it the minute it’s restocked on July 4th!

For vintage festival looks, try concessions such as Loving Youth at Topshop. Affordable vintage and cute prints, what more could you want? They have bardot tops, reworked camouflage halternecks, printed dungarees and shorts.

1467315572950.jpg

IMG_20160627_111411282.jpg

A printed swimsuit works equally well as a bodysuit with shorts or ripped jeans. I’d pair this funky H&M one with fray edge shorts.

IMG_20160618_133315299

It’s not a festival unless someone’s wearing tie-dye. Europe1972 on Etsy have fab tie dye t-shirts like this rainbow one. For a cool hippie vibe, check out their shop.

Finally patches and iron-on badges are a great way to liven a plain denim jacket. These pastel ones from Jade Boylan Etsy are girly but with loads of attitude!

badges.jpg
Img:Etsy.com

As for festival hair, little French braids on the crown of the head and Mohawk style braids are where it’s at.

braids.jpg
Img:Pinterest.com

This textured messy braid created by TressesbyTress is the ultimate in festival cool.

I also love this tiny centre braid as seen on Kate Bosworth (remember her?!)

Bombs Away

Bomber jackets are one of the hottest new spring trends. I’ve always loved a good bomber and I can’t wait to get out of my winter coat…will this winter ever end?! 😦 I actually spent most of Christmas desperately trying to hunt down a khaki bomber jacket for our customers, one day we’d stock them, the next day they were all gone.

This navy blue isn’t normally a colour I like but this one from Bershka is just the right shade.  It also comes in khaki and black.

navy bomber.jpg
Pic: Bershka.com

Also from Bershka is this looser style, great if you don’t like the fitted bomber style.

Another gorgeous navy/petrol blue option from New Look, really like the zip details.

American Apparel have a denim bomber hybrid which is really cool.

alt=

I especially like metallic/silky bombers and embroidery detail like this one from Asos Premium. Definitely one to save up for as it’s €91!

asos bomber.jpg
Pic: ASOS.com

And one worth taking out a loan for – a vintage Moschino beauty available on Asos.

image2xxl

There are also lots of long-line bomber styles out there but I prefer the short traditional style. If you haven’t seen anything you like here then get thee to Nine Crow St. because they have the best selection of bombers and flight jackets- you will be spoiled for choice!

N.B. I don’t receive any payment or incentive from Bershka or any of the brands featured here-these are all my personal choices.

Will you be buying a bomber jacket? Leave me a comment below and let me know. Thanks for reading as always, you can follow @joyofblogs on Instagram and Twitter or see my Facebook page here.
