Baywatch and bad tan lines: 10 of 2017’s hottest swimsuits

Fun fact about me: I learned to swim at the age of 24 after being terrified of water for 16 years. Nowadays I’m still not the best swimmer but I’m hoping that I will have sufficiently recovered from my injury to allow a dip in the ocean on holidays.

Every year I write a swimwear post and it’s always one of my most popular annual posts, so this year I’m going to do two. This post will be dedicated to one-piece swimsuits and I’ll have another on bikinis coming soon.

I’m loving the denim/chambray trend that’s everywhere at the moment and I have a particular soft spot for this denim-effect swimsuit from Vavavoom.ie. I love the lace-up side details and scoop back also and at €26.99, it’s a pretty good price for a swimsuit. Vavavoom offer next day delivery to the UK and Ireland for €2.99 which is pretty awesome!

UPDATE: I ordered this and it was not flattering on me. It’s definitely not for anyone bigger than a B-cup, it squashed my boobs flat!

alt=

Oh, I loved this River Island one-piece initially. It beckoned me in all it’s green iridescent glory..then I realised it had a thong back. Nothing wrong with that but not for me. If I were 18 and going to Magaluf then maybe 😛

alt=

Despite this I still love RI swimwear, just look at this bandana print one-piece.

alt=

It’s safe to say, Zara swimwear is never anything short of glorious, can we please take a minute for this beautiful purple floral one-piece with cross-over straps?

alt=

Zara is embracing the Baywatch trend with these incredible Baywatch-themed swimsuits, I really want one!

Penneys had an amazing red Baywatch-style suit at the start of the year for only €6 but there must have been some issue with it as it disappeared from my local Penneys never to be seen again. *sobs quietly*

UPDATE: I tracked it down in Primark in Newry for £4 so that’s part of my summer swimwear sorted.

It will look great with my orthopaedic boot, I just know it…

Side-ties are one of the biggest swimwear trends this summer and although they’re bound to lead to weird tan lines/burn marks I love them.

This gorgeous pink swimsuit from Pretty Little Thing comes in at just under €25.

alt=

For a Versace look on a Primark budget, check out this black one-piece with gold chain straps. It’s only €27 from Pretty Little Thing, what are you waiting for?! It was out of stock for ages but I’ve managed to find one. Also available in white.

Metallics look amazing in summer and every time I’ve passed by &OtherStories‘ window on Grafton Street, I’m drawn to this gorgeous shiny silver swimsuit.

At €49 it’s quite expensive but a cheaper alternative is this iridescent purple swimsuit from Missguided for just under €34. Perfect for the all the mermaid wannabes out there!

I hope you all enjoyed this post and are looking forward to the next installation. I really love swimwear despite not going away that often.

I’m looking forward to bringing you the bikini post and until then check out my Pinterest swimwear board for more inspiration.

Hope you all enjoyed this post, leave me a comment below and let me know.

Thrift Alert: Dublin’s best charity shops

There’s nothing better than getting your fashion fix while also doing a good deed. For years I’ve shopped in charity shops and am still amazed by the bargains. We’re talking brand new items with tags on, designer and leather handbags and beautiful vintage clothing.

Enable Ireland

This is one of my favourite charity shops with branches in Phibsborough, George’s Street, Capel Street, Camden Street, Finglas and Thomas Street. Enable Ireland have a good selection of items from workwear to children’s clothes and shoes. 100% of their profits go to funding disability services.

My best recent bargain from there has to be these black patent loafers which were brand new with a €70 sticker but sold for just €20. For more of my Enable Ireland bargains, check out my Charity Shopping Haul post.

I also found this lovely brand new Missguided playsuit in Enable Ireland’s Phibsborough branch. I got so many compliments when I wore this and it was only €4!

Irish Cancer Society

The Irish Cancer Society shops tend to be quite small but I always enjoy browsing around. I’ve found some good stuff in their Rathmines, Phibsborough and Capel Street shops. The Rathmines one is the most attractive and in general Rathmines charity shops tend to be of a very high calibre!

Oxfam (George’s St)

Oxfam have several stores around Dublin but their George’s Street store is the jewel in the crown. They have both ladieswear and menswear, vintage and a dedicated bridal section with many brand new and designer wedding dresses from sizes 6-22. Brides on a budget, look no further! Oxfam’s profits go to alleviating poverty in third world countries.

I bought these black leather shorts for about €4 in their Stephen’s Green store.

Another gorgeous bargain was this Versace-esque silky bomber.

scarf-print-jacket.jpg

St. Vincent de Paul

SVP are dedicated to helping those living in dire poverty in Ireland and assist thousands each year. Their George’s Street store is a must visit for any thrift shop maven. I’ve seen Versace and Moschino items here and they even have their their own vintage line.

I bought this oversized denim jacket and this cropped red shirt in their Phibsborough branch. (These are both Penneys items but I was on a strict budget at the time!) The jacket was brand new with tags, €8 and the shirt was about €4.

Respect (Stoneybatter)

And now for one slightly off the beaten track, the Respect shop in Stoneybatter is one of the most amazing charity shops I’ve ever been in. It looks quite unassuming but is one of the best for a genuine bargain. Among the items I’ve bought there include a black leather DKNY backpack for €6, a €2 Longchamps bag and a red leather American Apparel skirt for €10. I’ve also picked up some great vintage belts here. Respect support people with intellectual disabilities so it’s a really worthy cause.

Macro Shop, Macro Community Centre (North King’s Street)

I love shopping here as the Macro centre gives back to the local community. It also pays to shop here in winter, I recently found real Levi’s cut-offs and a red suede effect H&M skirt for €2 each! Their community centre provides services such as free legal aid, citizen’s information and advocacy to the local residents.

IMG_0711
I later found this skirt for €2!

There are other second hand shops around such as the Second Abbey on Abbey Street which has an incredible selection of clothes, homewares and bric a brac. In some senses, it’s more of a museum!

In general, I prefer to shop in a registered charity shop where possible. That way, you can be sure your purchases or donations always go to a genuine charity. If you want to detox your wardrobe, these shops always welcome donations of clean clothing and shoes.

Do you shop in charity shops? Leave me a comment and let me know if I’ve missed any good ones. Hope you all had a good new year and enjoyed this post.

Dupe bag alert! Designer lookalikes for under €20!

Dupe bags have a bad name, we’ve all seen (and bought at least once) tacky counterfeit bags on holidays abroad or at dodgy markets.  These days I’m on a quest to find cute dupes for a fraction of the price and here’s where to get them.

There are loads of dupe designs online from Chiara Ferragni, Gucci, Chloe to high street cult brand Skinnydip.

I love  Skinnydip London’s range of bags, they’re cute and quirky  statement pieces. But for a novelty bag they can be quite expensive, sometimes €40+ for a  small bag that can’t be worn everyday. Plus they sell out fast!

Recently I stumbled across bags on Shein.com which are an EXACT dupe for the Skinnydip bags but much cheaper!

chill pill

They have a dupe of the ‘Chill Pill’ bag which is sold out on Skinnydip and was about €35. From what I can see the  only difference is the width measurements are slightly different although they may have confused height and width. It’s made of the same material and provides the length of the chain (120cm) which Skinnydip didn’t specify. It’s currently €18.98 on Shein.com and €17.60 on Romwe.com.

Another popular Skinnydip design was the’Tequila’ hip flask. This is about €35 and sold out on the Skinnydip site. Selfridges.com had about 3 in stock for the same price.

The Skinnydip version…Pic: Skinnydip.com

On Shein.com, the bag comes in four different colours and is on sale at €19.10. I really want the turquoise version! The Shein silver one has a cheaper looking finish, it looks like it’s covered with big glitter flecks, while the Skinnydip one has a smoother looking finish. Measurements are slightly different again, the Skinnydip one looks a little larger. The silver one is also on Romwe for €18.53.

I’ve also found a very similar though not identical dupe for this ‘popcorn’ bag which was originally about €28 from Skinnydip. This was later reduced but then sold out.

popcorn bag skinnydip.jpg
Popcorn bag. Pic: Skinnydip.com

The Shein version is actually cuter in my opinion and is €16.37 at the moment. They seem to be the same size. The Skinnydip one is mixed materials while the Shein is 100% PU.

There are loads of other Skinnydip dupes available on Shein and Romwe from flying spaceships to milk cartons so go check them out!

These ‘Chloe’ style bags are currently on sale on Romwe.com. The black and gold version is €19.46 and €25.94 for the beige and cream.The black and gold one actually looks quite expensive.

While the blue two tone one is to die for and less than €20!

blue chloe bag.jpg

Super blogger Chiara Ferragni now has her own line of accessories and they don’t come cheap. But you can nab a clutch bag with Chiara’s ubiquitous winking eye design for €13.89 on Romwe.com!

cf dupe bag.jpg

This small wristlet bag is a great Gucci dupe and quite classy looking. Also less than €20 from Romwe.com.

gucci bag.jpg

And for a Moschino lookalike, try this ‘leather jacket’ bag from Romwe.com again less than €20.

As for a dupe bag to avoid see below…

campballs.jpg
‘Campballs Soup!!’ Pic: Romwe.com

Obviously, these bags will reflect the price and won’t be made of the same material of a designer bag (with the exception of the Skinnydip bags of course) so don’t expect too much from them! I’ve bought from both sites before but only bought a bag from Romwe which was fairly decent quality and got a lot of compliments!

Both of these sites have lengthy shipping times and similar prices so it’s best to suss out the individual deals/discounts before buying. There are other similar sites to these which also sell dupe bags but these are the ones I know best.

Hope you’ve all enjoyed this post, let me know if you liked these dupes and if there’s any I missed! Leave me a comment below and let me know if you’d buy a dupe bag.

Gianni Versace: Paying homage to the legendary designer

Someone once asked me who my favourite designer was and I had to think.

I don’t believe in blindly buying designer items just because they’re expensive or being in head to toe in designer clothing.

Naturally, my bank balance doesn’t permit me to own any designer clothing anyway but I do have a fab DKNY rucksack which I got for €6!

But back to my favourite designers: I have two.

Moschino is my current favourite but Gianni Versace has to be my all time favourite designer. I love his scarf prints and 90’s designs.

Versace is not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s garish (some would say tacky!), loud, colourful and in your face.

The jewellery is gold and ostentatious but that’s what makes it so great!

I think the 80s and 90s supermodels were far edgier and I love shots like these.

Naomi, Kate, Christy, Claudia, Linda et al. have a lot more attitude than the doe-eyed blank faces of Gigi and Kendall and the attention-seeking Cara Delevinge.

The most Versace-inspired item I own is this Topshop scarf print dress which everyone who saw it fell in love with!

I also have this gorgeous green jacket which was about €6 from a charity shop and comes out every summer! (These photos are from the early days of the blog..)

So, if you’re looking to get your paws on some Versace lookalikes, the best place to try is Etsy or Ebay.

Reworked sports bras are really popular right now such as this one from seller babydollcc.

Although if you have the sewing know-how something like this can easily be created at home!

Versace was influenced by Greek mythology and that is why the Versace logo is the head of Medusa.

This Versace style t-shirt would look great with jeans and flats.

Available from flowertea65 on Etsy.

If you are in search of a real Versace piece online be careful some shops may use the word “Versace” to describe a piece but their item is listed as “Versace-style” or “not associated with any brand name.”

Personally, I think buying second-hand designer online is risky and would try a high-end second-hand shop such as Siopaella or Portobello rather than an unknown.

Their sites are reliable and have genuine pre-owned designer items.

The shirts below are all vintage Versace style, available from SuccessDress on Etsy.

Genuine Versace jewellery can be found online! Bags and watches can fetch thousands.

Even Versace buttons can be found for sale on eBay.

These Greek god head earrings are only €9.90 from The Flea Style Market, I’m getting a pair as soon as payday arrives.

alt=

Nine Crow St also have some jewellery in this style.

Or this chunky gold chain from Bershka.

gold chain.jpg

Img: Bershka.com

I bought these stunning Versace style heels from Missguided but had to return them as the heel was really thin and I couldn’t walk in them!

They were from the premium Peace + Love collection but they weren’t better quality than any other shoes you’d buy online from a similar site.

Hope you all enjoyed this post, I updated it because I’ve been watching The Assassination of Gianni Versace and I’m obsessed!

I want to go to Miami and visit the mansion..maybe one day!

If you want to leave me a comment my comment icon is the grey speech bubble icon on the bottom right, it can be hard to see on this theme.

My next post will be on Angel Haze’s Academy gig, really excited for this.

Chupi’s 10th Anniversary

This evening I attended the 10th anniversary of Irish jewellery label Chupi.

Chupi Sweetman is one of Ireland’s most successful jewellery designers, known for her delicate pieces inspired by nature and the wild.

I love looking at the Chupi instagram account so I was dying to see the collection in real life!

The event was held upstairs in the Powerscourt centre and was decorated with gold balloons and bunting.

Chupi herself looked amazing in a flesh colour dress with white lace floral details, in the style of For Love and Lemons dresses. She also had a gorgeous gold hairpiece.

I went with a fellow jewellery fanatic Siobhan from Aquaruby so I was in good company. 🙂

We got a glass of wine first thing and browsed all the gorgeous jewellery on display.

Unfortunately, I’m still restricted by the student budget so I wasn’t buying but had a lot of fun looking. I wore a vintage shirt, black jeans and snakeskin boots to the event.

These are some of my favourite pieces from the collection. I loved the Constellation pieces especially each representing a star sign.

I also fell in love with the Crown of Love laurel leaf earrings which can be worn as an earring or ear cuff.

The farthing coin Worth your Weight in Gold earrings are amazing, a little piece of history in the palm of your hand. Available in silver, gold or rose gold.

Outside a girl offered to take a polaroid picture of myself, Siobhan and her friend Meabh.

The picture came out lovely and we actually drew straws over who should keep it! I won 😛

alt=<polaroid>

As well as the delicate gold pieces, there were also gorgeous colourful pieces like these beautiful rings.

  alt=<colourful rings>  alt=<blue ring>

And while I normally don’t wear rings, I did fall in love with the One in Million star ring below.

 alt=<gold star ring>   alt=<mirror>

The Wild Ivy leaf earrings below were another favourite. These are cast from a real ivy leaf.

alt=<globe> alt=<gold leaf earring>  alt=<belljar>

The swan feather necklace and I Can Fly earrings below on the right are exquisite. Again these were cast using real swan feathers and are plated with rose gold.

alt=<rose gold feather earring>       alt=<gold bracelet>

We also got a lovely goody bag with a cute notebook and pencil-perfect for college! I really wanted some nice stationary for college so I was thrilled.

 It was a lovely evening and it’s always great to see Irish and independent designers doing well.Here’s to the next ten years of Chupi.

Kick the Bucket

Bucket bags are the new rucksack and my new favourite obsession. It’s the grown-up’s alternative to a rucksack but still a fun casual bag.The designer duo who began this craze are Mansur Gavriel who launched a sell-out leather bucket bag in 2013. Since this their bags have been in high demand by fashion-lovers and celebrities everywhere.

Other designers such as Moschino and Michael Kors also want a piece of the action.

The Mansur Gavriel designs retail at $400-$1000 so for those of us not so flush here are few gorgeous alternatives. Everyday walking to work I pass 9 Crow St and take a good gawk in the window.  I’ve been lusting after a gorgeous holographic bucket bag I saw there. I found a similar style on Etsy here.

alt= "Holographic Bucket Bag"

Etsy is brilliant site for finding original handmade bags. The Pingypearshop have an amazing selection and all under €30!

alt= "Bucket Bags"

As well as these, Etsy also sell vintage and leather one-of-a-kind bucket bags. It’s the best place to pick up something that no-one else will have.

Zara are always very quick off the mark so I’m not surprised they have capitalised on this trend.

Gorgeous Zara bucket bag with zip detail  *swoon*.

And if white’s more your colour, Zara also have a fabulous perforated white bucket bag.

alt= "white bucket bag"

If these are beyond your budget, Penneys have some gorgeous bucket bags in store at the moment for about €10. Can’t say no to that 😉 I’m a personal fan of this green and black one and they also have a lovely black fringed one.

alt="bucket bag"

So far I haven’t bought any bucket bags but something tells me it won’t be long before I own one! I will have to part with a few of my rucksacks first if that’s even possible… Thanks for reading my blog as always. If you like the blog, please support it on Facebook here.
