Clueless Checks: The Autumn/Winter trend you’ve all been waiting for

To say that I like the movie Clueless is an understatement.

It is one of those films that always puts a big cheesy smile on my face, it’s full of hilarious moments, amazing fashion and has that feel-good factor.

I can relate to Dionne’s terrible driving and sassy one-liners, Tai’s awkward adorableness and Cher’s comedic outbursts and shopping addiction.

And of course, the outfits are a whole mood by themselves.

alt=
Clueless outfits

So, you can imagine my delight to see Clueless-style checks everywhere in the shops recently.

alt=< cher-horowitz-dionne>
Cher and Dionne. Pic: Pinterest

While bright yellow checks aren’t the easiest look to rock, brown Burberry-style ones are much easier to wear.

Obviously, the most iconic Cher look is the plaid mini-kilt so I had to get my hands on one.

I picked up this miniskirt in Penneys during the week after seeing it on a colleague.

alt=<plaid-miniskirt-primark>
Penneys plaid miniskirt

I think it will look great with this white v-neck top also from Penneys and ankle boots for autumn/winter.

alt=<primark-white-vneck-top>

The only thing I’m cautious about is the front so I think I would probably stick to black tights with this one in case of wardrobe malfunctions!

The skirt was €12 while the top was €6 so a whole outfit for under €20.

And I also love this yellow check look although the skirt looks like it would only fit a four-year-old!

Asos, of course, have the look nailed with this adorable yellow check co-ord set.

Team the skirt with 90s style clunky sandals or black Converse high-tops.

alt=

Shop in sterling and nab the whole outfit for just under €60.

If you aren’t a mini-kilt kinda gal, then these cute pink check shorts allow you to get your legs out but still be comfy.

Pair with a bumbag or mini rucksack for ultimate Cher vibes. These are €23 from Nasty Gal.

alt=<pink-check-shorts>

And if you want to go all out, this square neck lilac check dress from Boohoo.com is just the ticket.

At just €20, it won’t break the bank!

alt=

Another option for a glam night out is this plaid crop leg jumpsuit from Romwe.com.

This is currently reduced from €32.45 to €11.

alt=

This double-breasted blazer is a great piece to dress up or down and is €38 from Boohoo.com.

Unfortunately, the double-breasted style can be hard to pull off but everyone who can wear it, I salute you!

alt=<check-double-breasted-blazer>

For a more subtle look, try this sweet check pinafore from Bershka reduced from €24.99 to only €9.99 in sale.

Pinafore and dungaree dresses are really trendy at the moment and suit most shapes and sizes.

alt=<check-pinafore-dress>

&OtherStories is one of my favourite shops for really cool fashion-forward pieces.

These chunky plaid platforms are quite expensive at €89 but they are a real statement piece.

Finally, for autumn/winter this “waistcoat” (I think it’s a dress) looks great layered over turtlenecks or on its own with black tights.

I found this on Stradivarius’ Armenian site (don’t ask) but converted to euro it comes in at €46.

Baywatch and bad tan lines: 10 of 2017’s hottest swimsuits

Fun fact about me: I learned to swim at the age of 24 after being terrified of water for 16 years. Nowadays I’m still not the best swimmer but I’m hoping that I will have sufficiently recovered from my injury to allow a dip in the ocean on holidays.

Every year I write a swimwear post and it’s always one of my most popular annual posts, so this year I’m going to do two. This post will be dedicated to one-piece swimsuits and I’ll have another on bikinis coming soon.

I’m loving the denim/chambray trend that’s everywhere at the moment and I have a particular soft spot for this denim-effect swimsuit from Vavavoom.ie. I love the lace-up side details and scoop back also and at €26.99, it’s a pretty good price for a swimsuit. Vavavoom offer next day delivery to the UK and Ireland for €2.99 which is pretty awesome!

UPDATE: I ordered this and it was not flattering on me. It’s definitely not for anyone bigger than a B-cup, it squashed my boobs flat!

alt=

Oh, I loved this River Island one-piece initially. It beckoned me in all it’s green iridescent glory..then I realised it had a thong back. Nothing wrong with that but not for me. If I were 18 and going to Magaluf then maybe 😛

alt=
Green swimsuit. Pic: River Island.com

Despite this I still love RI swimwear, just look at this bandana print one-piece.

alt=

It’s safe to say, Zara swimwear is never anything short of glorious, can we please take a minute for this beautiful purple floral one-piece with cross-over straps?

alt=

Zara is embracing the Baywatch trend with these incredible Baywatch-themed swimsuits, I really want one!

Penneys had an amazing red Baywatch-style suit at the start of the year for only €6 but there must have been some issue with it as it disappeared from my local Penneys never to be seen again. *sobs quietly*

UPDATE: I tracked it down in Primark in Newry for £4 so that’s part of my summer swimwear sorted.

It will look great with my orthopaedic boot, I just know it…

Side-ties are one of the biggest swimwear trends this summer and although they’re bound to lead to weird tan lines/burn marks I love them.

This gorgeous pink swimsuit from Pretty Little Thing comes in at just under €25.

alt=

For a Versace look on a Primark budget, check out this black one-piece with gold chain straps. It’s only €27 from Pretty Little Thing, what are you waiting for?! It was out of stock for ages but I’ve managed to find one. Also available in white.

Metallics look amazing in summer and every time I’ve passed by &OtherStories‘ window on Grafton Street, I’m drawn to this gorgeous shiny silver swimsuit.

At €49 it’s quite expensive but a cheaper alternative is this iridescent purple swimsuit from Missguided for just under €34. Perfect for the all the mermaid wannabes out there!

I hope you all enjoyed this post and are looking forward to the next installation. I really love swimwear despite not going away that often.

I’m looking forward to bringing you the bikini post and until then check out my Pinterest swimwear board for more inspiration.

Hope you all enjoyed this post, leave me a comment below and let me know.

Bargain Bonanza: My Sale Shopping Picks

There’s only one cure for the post-Christmas blues: online shopping and hot whiskey. 😛 I’m currently lying in bed feeling very sick and sorry for myself so what better time to browse the best sale bargains?

Missguided is offering up to 75% off sale items. FYI if you have a holiday booked, their swimwear is massively reduced right now. Go forth and shop…

They also have some gorgeous dresses in sale, from causal slip dresses to more glamorous styles. New Year’s Eve outfit dilemmas sorted!

This 2-in 1 leopard camisole dress is reduced from €37.50 to €18.75, great for casual wear.

alt=

This black cold shoulder dress is a new twist on the classic slip dress. It’s reduced from €42 to €16.80.

alt=

For a New Year’s outfit, I love this Balmain-esque floral red dress.

It has all the Balmain details with zip front and black piping but has a more affordable price tag! This was €105 but now just €42.

alt=< Missguided zip through dress>

Asos is offering up 50% off sale items. Among the shoes I’m lusting after are these own brand silver loafers, €16, reduced from €27.

alt=

Another own brand bargain are these studded black flats. At only €22 now, they will be ideal for spring. They were €38 full price.

alt=< black studded flats>

Daisy Street is one of my favourite footwear brands available on Asos, they have amazing statement ankle boots including these two-tone snakeskin beauties. These are reduced from €47 to €27.33.

alt=< ankle boots>
Two tone snakeprint ankle boots.

I’m a big fan of Zara jeans as they are quite hard-wearing and a good fit. They have lots funky styles in sale from grungy paint-spattered jeggings to pink mom fit jeans.

These are all reduced from €29.95 to €19.95. Word of advice, Zara tends to stagger their reductions so these may go down further in price if you can wait.

Denim-lovers will also appreciate these Zara shirts. These are reduced to €39.99 from €49.95. Still relatively pricey but may be reduced further.

Pretty Little Thing is offering up to 50% off sale items at the moment.

They have some beautiful sequin playsuits and dresses if you’re looking for a little sparkle this New Year’s.

One thing to note about PLT’s sale is that an item may be reduced in one colour but not in another.

For example, the sequin playsuit is reduced from €42 to €16.80 in green, silver and gold but a multi-colour version is still full-price. The premium sequin dress is reduced from €70 to €42.

They also have statement bombers and cute accessories like this chain detail bag and multi-colour scarf. The purple bomber is now 50% off (was €49, now €24), the scarf is €8.40 (was €11.25) and the bag €21 down from €31.

River Island have some great discounts on winter coats at the moment. The cream puffer is half price at €60 and both the brown and pink coats are marked down from €95 to €45.

For sale shopping tips, check out my previous post and for online sale shopping hacks and discounts click here. I’ve rounded up some of the prices as decimal points frustrate me. 😛

Remember to check the returns policy, it will save you a lot of hassle. I recently attempted returning a full-price choker to Forever 21 only to find they don’t accept returns on jewellery.

It was in perfect condition, still in packaging and the receipt was in date! *shakes fist*

I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a lovely New Year also. Do you love or loathe sale shopping? Leave me a comment below.

PS- these are all my personal choices, I didn’t receive any payment or incentive to promote these brands. Thanks for reading as always and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

Fishnet Frenzy

It may be one of the most bizarre trends of 2016 but fishnet tights underneath jeans are having a sartorial moment. And if someone told me that a year ago, I’d have thought they were certifiably insane!

When I bought a pair of fishnet tights for my Halloween outfit I didn’t think I’d ever be wearing them again. Little did I know…

But with this unseasonably warm weather, there’s never been a better time to try it out! Last week I decided to dig out mine and layer them under baggy Zara jeans with ripped knees.

Halfway to town I shed my coat and scarf, it was ROASTING but at least my legs were cool in the fishnet and rips combo! I may have gotten the odd strange look but not as many as I’d anticipated.

There are several ways to wear fishnets and jeans. They can be layered under loose ripped jeans or pulled up over the waistband of your jeans with a crop top or cropped hoody.

Blue or black jeans in a boyfriend or mom fit work best with this combination.

For a more daring look, jeans with cut-out panels will showcase your fishnets also.

alt=
Fishnets and jeans. Pic: Pinterest.com

You can customise old jeans by ripping them up or chopping out a side panel if you want to experiment with this look.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOAer_vB42r/?tagged=fishnets

Fishnet socks with runners or loafers are really cute and don’t require you to freeze to death or flash flesh. They look especially good with raw hem or cropped jeans.White fishnet socks are also great with runners.

alt=<black fishnets>
Black fishnet socks with Gucci loafers. Pic: Pinterest.com

A white t-shirt, cropped hoody or long coat all compliment this look. Casual flats or runners are the best accompaniment.

Fishnet tights come in all sizes and colours so don’t feel you have to conform to the bog standard black ones. Red ones look great with blue jeans and white or nude fishnets are more subtle. You can even get embellished crystallized fishnets on Etsy.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOCM65ZACcy/?tagged=fishnets

My fishnets were €7.99 from H & M but you can get them in most shops. If you’re having trouble finding some, then just hit up Ann Summers you’re bound to get them there!

You can buy fishnet socks and oversize fishnet tights on Asos.com. I really like these as they have a reinforced toe making them less likely to rip.

Fishnets are actually quite versatile and when it gets warmer I’ll be wearing mine with skirts and vintage Levis cut-offs. The downsides are they rip easily, are handwash only and can leave a diamond imprint on your legs and waist!

What do you guys make of this trend? Would you try it out? Leave me a comment below and let me know.

Thanks for reading as always and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

The Unwearables: Ski pants, puffer jackets and popper trackies!

I don’t know about you but I almost fell off my chair when I saw an article featuring ski pants on Vogue.com! This winter, prepare to see ski pants, puffer jackets and even button up tracksuit pants are making an appearance.

The ladies over at TownMouse CountryMouse Ireland forecasted the ski pants trend sometime ago by the way.

Now I love a good throwback so I’m doing my best to embrace this look.

Anywhere I’ve seen ski pants featured, they’re styled with a heel but I can’t help thinking the skinny styles are still unflattering….and don’t get me started on fashion editorials where the stirrup is wrapped around a heel!

alt=
Black skinny ski pants. Pic: Mango.com

Personally I think they look good in a looser leg with a mule type shoe or with runners in traditional nineties style. They do compliment heeled loafers also.

If you really want to go for the Alps/Aspen look, then you’ll need a giant puffy jacket as well! Take Kenny from South Park as your inspo and you’re on the right track.

I’m normally not a fan of either of puffers or parkas but this season’s ones are cute and girly like this pink River Island one.

This is the ultimate winter jacket, it’s a gorgeous colour, super warm and a great length. I tried it on yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was.

alt=
Pink puffer jacket. Pic: River Island.com

It also looks very nice with a pop of pink lipstick! FYI, €120 but I would buy it if I could afford it! (I bought it in the end thanks to Asos’s Black Friday discount 😉

alt=
I love the fluffy collar!

This Balenciaga ad manages to combine both puffer jacket and ski pants-impressed!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLAQg-sB8iZ/?tagged=pufferjacket

Padded/Puffer jackets look best in a matte material, the shiny ones just look a bit cheap and tacky. Steer clear!

Slogans add some fun detail like this Topshop one. Oh and the bigger the better or otherwise it’s not a puffer jacket!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLMDCw0DFcB/?tagged=pufferjacket

We’ve all seen that photo of Kim in her Adidas trackies and bizarre as it is I have to say it’s one of her better outfits. She almost looks semi-comfortable unlike when she’s squeezed herself into nude cycling shorts and sock boots…shudder!

Can they actually make a comeback? Is this a throwback too far?! Where did Kim even find them…in a museum?!

To top off all this, the shoes of the season are clunky heeled loafers. Let that sink in.  Loafers aren’t the prettiest of shoes but they are damn smart! These classic black ones from Zara are one of my favourites this year. They are €49.95.

alt=
Black loafer. Pic: Zara.com

Even if you’re not a massive fan, you have to admit they’re better than mules or flats with ballet laces…and those are your other two choices shoe lovers!

Backless styles are a nightmare, stick to a traditional black embellished loafer or mix it up with these colourful Topshop ones.

To be honest, there are ways to style even the most “unwearable” of trends! The only things I will say an emphatic no to are the aforementioned awful lace-up ballet shoes.

alt=

Let’s all say it together: NO!

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think of these trends. Thanks as always for reading my blog and don’t forget to check out my InstagramTwitter and Facebook page here.

The Choker Comeback

When was the last time you wore a choker? Chances are you were about 10 years old and they were as cool as gel pens and candy cigarettes in the playground.

Chokers have undergone quite a makeover since then. Out with the cheap black plastic and in with velvet, colour, layers and embellishment.

Let’s skip over the bizarre trend of choker dresses and embrace chokers how they were meant to be worn-as jewellery and accessories.

Bershka chokers.jpg
Choker set, Bershka.Pic.Bershka.com

Although so far, I’ve only bought black chokers (which go with everything FYI), I’m loving all the colourful ones like the  Bershka set above.

Wearing several chokers (if your neck is long enough!) or mixing them with dainty necklaces is the ultimate style statement.

alt=

Zara have some of the classiest chokers you’re ever likely to see. Also models with impossibly long necks…

alt=

I also really like bohemian chokers and pendant chokers. Etsy is the best place to find crystal chokers like this from ShopCrystalChild.

I also love the contrast in styles of this velvet and opal choker necklace from Alapopjewelry.

alt=

If you want to customise your own choker, then hit up Choker Saint on Etsy.com.

choker styles.jpg

For a punk vibe, try Nine Crow St’s heart chokers. I’m in love with this lilac one.

alt=
Lilac choker. Pic: Shopninecrows.com

I find the cord chokers are  messy and difficult to wear and the chunky ones look a bit odd so I’m sticking to skinny lace styles. Most chokers are adjustable to prevent them being too lose or too tight.

However if you can perfect the bow style, go for it!

alt=
Pic: Pinterest.com
 This black lace choker is one of a set of two from Penneys and is the best fuss-free accessory ever!

Diamante styles are also creeping back but I’m not sure if I like them…if you fancy one then check out Chvker on Instagram.

I’m definitely going to be buying some more chokers soon. Do you like the choker trend? Which styles would you go for? Leave me a comment below and let me know your thoughts.

The Retro Sportswear trend

I’m not a fan of sportswear outside the gym unless it’s retro sportswear. These retro sports styles are back with a bang this summer.

All those brands which you thought you’d never see again are slowly sneaking back into fashion! Remember Kappa? Umbro?? Don’t believe me?…just watch!

These sports bra style tops from Bershka come in red, white, black and grey, My favourite is the grey with contrasting waistband.

bershka sports top.jpg

Cult 90’s sports brands like FILA and Ellesse are making a comeback on the high street.

This tracksuit top from JD sports is a gorgeous colour and super snug fit.

Asos can always be relied on to spot a trend and have some great retro t-shirts, hoodies, crop-tops and polo shirts on their site at the moment.

They also even have Ellesse logo bodycon dresses but to be honest I think that’s a bit too much.

I particularly like this FILA t-shirt which looks great with denim shorts rather an all-over sporty look. They also stock Champion sportswear but it’s quite pricey.

One of my favourite Instagram accounts is @croptopchannel. I’m in love with their reworked sportswear.

Vintage polo shirts and roundneck t-shirts are great for casual wear. These are from Thrifty Store on Asos Marketplace.

Reworked clothes with sports logo waistbands are really popular on Etsy and Instagram at the moment. From lingerie to bikinis to co-ords, the choices are endless.

This top works as a bralette or bikini from Etsy shop @Baewatch99.

Also from Etsy are these reworked Tommy Hilfiger t-shirts and crossover bikini with high leg briefs. Visit the Weekendbout store for more.

I absolutely love this bikini and the high leg briefs are really trendy this year. Probably thanks to Kylie Jenner. 😛

Fashion Disasters

A while back I wrote a post on 90’s style which got me thinking how about a post on my fashion mistakes from the 90’s/early 00s? UNFORTUNATELY I don’t have pictures but lets face it we don’t need the pictures.

1996-1998-The Formative Years

A green fleece jacket with a black and white check skirt, red and white runners and orange cat print socks. This was paired with a too-short fringe and a menacing grin in my brother’s confirmation photos….

PS..nor did I learn from the too-short fringe and cut my own fringe at the more mature age of 25….here’s the damage!

alt="hair"

I also had a yellow fleece which I wore with beige combats…or navy track suit pants which buttoned at the side….

alt="tracksuit bottoms"

The best accessories were friendship bracelets and friendship necklaces. These were a status symbol in primary school.

alt="Friendship necklace"

Oh the ubiquitous Spice Girl necklace and mood rings. And hairbands with your name in luminous writing.

1998-1999 Hair Experiments

I think hair disasters are part of everyone’s pre-teen/teenage years. I had a camouflage scrunchie which I tied my hair up with and left two appealing tendrils down by my face.My hair was long and really fine, it looked horrendous like this!

1999-2000 Hair and Make-up Experiments.

alt=" Lizzie McGuire"

Hair mascara. BLUE HAIR MASCARA. Complete with more face glitter than Kesha and orangey red lipstick. Definitely a great look for the disco. Totally.

alt="face glitter"

I also really coveted cornrows and did two little braids each side of my head with beads at the end. I blame Alicia Keys/Christina Aguilera equally.

alt="alicia keys cornrows"

alt="christina aguilera"

2000- Over-Accessorising.

Bandana and butterfly hair clips…. together!

alt="butterfly clips"

CONFIRMATION

My confirmation outfit was actually quite cute. Purple velvet flared combats and a matching top with a white polo neck inside. (The polo neck was my mother’s idea). I had huge crimped hair with a straight fringe. Silver hair clips and massive clunky black shoes finished the look.

2001-Flares

Flares worn only with humongous clumpy heeled shoes (flares ended up being too short) or runners (flares dragged in the mud/rain). Oh and if I found jeans that weren’t wide enough to be flares no problem. Being the creative that I am, I simply cut open the seams slightly on each inside leg. TA-DA, FLARES!

2002 Goth Flirtation

Going to secondary school I wore the same denim jacket over my uniform for about two years. It was a long time before I could wear a denim jacket again. I also tried the Goth look (in private) wearing all black, chains on my jeans and purple eye shadow. Oh and I found a red and white studded leather jacket and wore it every single day. Musical influences included Good Charlotte and Avril Lavigne.

2003-2005-The Bling Years

I had LOTS of diamante jewellery and long dangly necklaces and earrings. I was trying to emulate my dubious idols…R’n’B singers and Footballers Wives……

alt="Tanya Turner"
Tanya Turner though
alt="destinys-child"
I still like these outfits! 😛

Also I used to buy “sets” with matching earrings and necklaces.Huge studded belts featured heavily also.

2005-2006 Sexy Outfits

Then when I reached “adulthood” (17/18), I had fitted white flared jeans which were paired with a green and white boob tube and a beige jacket. OH and they had diamante on the pockets. I looked so good drinking my Smirnoff Ice..

Or if I wanted to dress down this outfit, I wore the white jeans with a red zip-up tracksuit top. All other casual looks consisted of wide leg jeans and hoodies with slogans such as “Foxy.”

A denim skirt with huge rainbow coloured wedges. The shoes were a size too big also…Also the year of red highlights in brown hair 😥

So there you have the entire litany of disasters. It’s been fun looking back through my fashion disasters and hope it made you smile! Who knows I may find the photos one day yet!  Leave me a comment if you have some fashion disasters to share 😉 As always you can like my blog on Facebook here and follow me on Twitter here. Thanks for reading as always.
